Report: Saints will use franchise tag on Jimmy Graham
According to a report the Saints will use the franchise tag on Jimmy Graham before Monday's deadline.
There's a battle brewing in the Bayou between the Saints and tight end Jimmy Graham as to how much money the prolific pass catching tight end will receive in 2014. That's because, according to a report, the Saints will use the franchise tag on Graham ahead of Monday's deadline.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports what many expect, that the Saints will place the tag on Graham.
This shouldn't be a huge shock. Graham is one of the most dangerous offensive weapon on the Saints high-powered attack and one of the most dynamic receiving threats in the NFL.
The only question is whether he'll get paid as a wide receiver -- which he wants -- or as a tight end -- which the team wants.
Graham is a tight end by definition, but spends most of his time split out wide and catching the ball.
The tag price for a tight end is substantially cheaper; it's estimated that a tight end will cost in the $6 million range, while a wideout will likely be north of $11 million. (Joel Corry has a great breakdown of those numbers here.)
Graham has a pretty good argument, except for the fact that he, you know, is a tight end. It's going to be an interesting debate once the Saints officially place the tag on Graham before Monday, March 3.
