Report: Steelers to re-sign RB Jonathan Dwyer
With the season-ending injury LaRod Stephens-Howling, the Steelers have made a quick move to shore up their running back depth.
The Steelers had a brutal day Sunday, showing little offensive capability in their 16-9 defeat to the Titans and losing three players (center Maurkice Pouncey, linebacker Larry Foote and running back LaRod Stephens-Howling) to season-ending injuries.
Though Pouncey is the biggest loss to the team, Pittsburgh has moved quickly to fill in its running back depth by re-signing Jonathan Dwyer, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
There was chatter on Twitter late Sunday night that, based on the performances by Giants running backs David Wilson (two lost fumbles) and Da’Rel Scott that New York might try to sign Dwyer, but obviously, the Giants now will have to look elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Dwyer, Pittsburgh’s leading rusher from last season, returns to a Steelers squad that released him before the regular season because “his coaches did not feel he took his job seriously enough.” Another problem initially for Dwyer: the team drafted Le’Veon Bell in the second round (he’s out for now with a foot sprain), and it was confident, at the time, in Stephens-Howling, Redman and Felix Jones to move ahead without Dwyer.
“It's a curious decision for a team that is known for having big backs work between the tackles, but Pittsburgh has moved to an outside zone-blocking scheme this season, and perhaps there was no place for Dwyer in this offense, at least when compared to the rest of the depth chart at running back,” colleague Ryan Wilson wrote at the time.
Now, though, the team needs depth at running back. And it needs talent. Against the Titans, Stephens-Howling rushed for 19 yards on six carries while Isaac Redman mustered only nine yards on eight carries.
The offense, as a whole, was pretty awful.
Perhaps Dwyer can do his part in changing some of that storyline.
