Report: Texans agree to terms with former Kansas State QB Collin Klein
The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with former Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, according to reports. Klein will appear at quarterback, not running back or strong safety as speculated during the pre-draft process. It is unlikely the Texans will enter training camp with five quarterbacks on the roster. Houston entered the draft with four quarterbacks on its depth chart.
Since becoming the head coach of the Houston Texans in 2006, Gary Kubiak, a longtime backup quarterback with the Broncos, has never been apprehensive about stockpiling quarterbacks on his roster.
On Monday, Kubiak took a chance on another prospect that is ostensibly regarded as a project at best. Despite the presence of Matt Schaub, T.J. Yates, Case Keenum and Stephen McGee on the depth chart, the Texans have reportedly agreed to terms with former Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, as an undrafted free agent. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reported that Klein will appear at quarterback, not as a running back or strong safety as speculated during the pre-draft process.
Klein (6-5, 226) produced eye-popping numbers in a dual-threat capacity in 2012, when he finished third behind Johnny Manziel and Manti Te’o in the Heisman Trophy balloting. The former Wildcats’ quarterback rushed for 27 touchdowns last season, tying Ricky Williams for the most touchdowns in a single-season by a Big 12 player. Klein also tied former Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a year.
Klein, who started his collegiate career at wide receiver, worked on refining his mechanics in the weeks leading up to the draft by keeping his front shoulder closed and remaining more balanced with his footwork on his drops. Klein finished the 2012 season with 3,561 total yards and 39 total touchdowns. It marked the second consecutive season that Klein surpassed the 3,000 yard mark in total yards.
The Texans will not enter training camp with all five quarterbacks on their roster, the Chronicle reported.
