Jay-Z's drawn plenty of scrutiny during his short time as a sports agent, huh? The rapper/mogul's been investigated by the NFLPA (and rapped about it!) and had South Carolina look into an alleged relationship with Jadaveon Clowney earlier this year. Now there are rumors of his involvement with UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley.
Jason Cole of the National Football Post reports that Hundley "has had his representatives talk" to Roc Nation Sports, Jay-Z's sports agency, "about possibly being his agent should Hundley declare for the draft in April."
Of course, as our college colleague Jerry Hinnen helpfully pointed out when the Clowney rumors popped up, there's nothing wrong with "merely talk[ing] to an agent" or "socializ[ing] with an agent" based on NCAA by-laws.
It is not a violation of NCAA rules if a student-athlete merely talks to an agent (as long as an agreement for agent representation is not established) or socializes with an agent. For example, a student-athlete could go to dinner with an agent and no NCAA violations would result if the student-athlete provided his own transportation and paid for his meal.
The bigger impact here would be the likelihood that Hundley, the NFLDraftScout.com No. 6 overall prospect for the 2014 NFL Draft, would leave the Bruins after his redshirt sophomore year and turn pro.
It would be a bigger issue, of course, if there were any benefits provided to Hundley by Roc Nation, but it doesn't appear that's any issue right now.
Hundley leaving wouldn't be surprising at all but it could make things interesting for the draft. Between Hundley, Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota and Johnny Manziel, the 2014 NFL Draft class could be stocked with quarterbacks.
