Rex Ryan: Geno Smith will be Jets starter in Week 14 vs. Raiders
Geno Smith said on Monday that he's been told he will be the Jets starting quarterback against Oakland in Week 14. Smith was benched in the second half of the Jets loss to Miami on Sunday.
Jets quarterback Geno Smith might have gotten benched during New York's 23-3 loss to Miami on Sunday, but that doesn't mean he's lost his job. Smith said on Monday that quarterbacks coach David Lee has informed him that he'll be the Jets starting quarterback against Oakland.
Rex Ryan confirmed that information at his press conference on Monday, "I believe in Geno. I think he has the tools to be a good quarterback in this league," Ryan said.
Smith was benched after going 4 of 10 for 29 yards in the first half against the Dolphins and leading the Jets to zero points. "If it was a tactic to wake me up or get me going, it definitely worked," Smith said on Monday.
After Smith was benched, backup quarterback Matt Simms came in and didn't look much better. Simms finished 9 of 18 for 79 yards, however, he did lead the team to their only points, a 20-yard field goal by Nick Folk.
It's been a rough rookie season for Smith, who hasn't thrown a touchdown pass since Oct. 20. Smith's 19 interceptions through 13 weeks is the most in NFL and his quarterback rating of 60.4 is the lowest in the league.
