Rex Ryan says 'no validity' to Darrelle Revis trade rumors

INDIANAPOLIS -- You've probably heard a thing or two about this, but the Jets are open to trading Darrelle Revis, as first reported by CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.

Of course, this isn't something they're going to admit and new Jets general manager John Idzik and Rex Ryan did their best on Thursday at the combine to quash the rumors that they'd be willing to move Revis.

"Darrelle Revis is obviously a great football player. He's a tremendous asset for our football team and our organization," Idzik said. "We've always wanted Darrelle as part of our team. That has not changed."

Ryan was a little more straightforward, saying that there is "no validity" to the rumor that they want to trade Revis.

"Plain and simple, it's not accurate. I told [Revis] that," Ryan said. "There's no validity to that trade."

Here's the problem, though: Idzik also opened up the possibility that Revis could ultimately be evaluated, along with every single player on the Jets roster. And Ryan said if Jim Brown was on the other side of a trade he'd consider making a swap. (It was supposed to be a joke, but don't you think he'd move Revis for Tom Brady straight up if the Patriots called him?)

Additionally, as long as Revis doesn't hold out, he's going to be a free agent after 2013 with the Jets unable to tag him because of his contract setup. That means he could straight-up walk for nothing.

It's understandable that Idzik and Ryan want the heat to cool off on this issue. It's dominating them so much that a), Idzik appeared to lose his cool a little bit after 12-straight minutes of Revis-related questions and b), there was only a single Tim Tebow-related question posed to both guys during more than a half hour of questioning.
