Rolando McClain says police 'arrested the wrong guy'
Ravens linebacker Rolando McClain claims he wasn't the man who cursed at police in Decatur, Ala., on Sunday night. McClain's arrest for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest has put his career in jeopardy.
Ravens linebacker Rolando McClain says his third arrest in 16 months began with a case of mistaken identity.
In an interview with the Madison (Ala.) Weekly News, McClain said he wasn’t the one who cursed at police Sunday night as they tried to break up a disturbance at a park in Decatur, Ala.
“The situation could have been avoided on my part, but I was at the park in an attempt to keep my brother out of trouble as he said he was going to the park because some guys had spit on his car and had harassed him,” McClain told the paper.
“The police were already at the park when I arrived. I tried to get my brother to calm down. Police thought I cussed them. It wasn’t me. They arrested the wrong guy.”
McClain said that after he was handcuffed and placed in the back of a squad car, he broke down and thought to himself, “This probably could end my chance to play football.”
Police allege that as McClain walked past an officer, he yelled to the crowd, “[Expletive] the police.” When officers said they were arresting him for disorderly conduct, McClain twice tried to jerk his arms away, leading to a charge of resisting arrest, police said.
McClain was drafted eighth overall by the Raiders in 2010. Oakland released the 23-year-old after three seasons in which he amassed 274 tackles, 6.5 sacks and an interception.
Baltimore, which lost Ray Lewis to retirement and Dannell Ellerbe to the Dolphins, signed McClain to a one-year, incentive-laden $700,000 deal without a signing bonus.
The Ravens have said they are "paying attention" to due process in this case. Baltimore still is expected to draft a linebacker Friday or Saturday.
