Rookie Russell Wilson wins Seahawks starting quarterback job over Flynn

When Matt Flynn signed his $19.5 million contract in the offseason, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll most likely assumed he had found his starting quarterback. Even when Seattle drafted Russell Wilson in the third round, who would have thought he would challenge Flynn for the right to run the No. 1 offense?

But on Sunday, Carroll announced what was once thought a longshot: Wilson has won the starting quarterback job.

“Russell has shown nothing but that he is a quarterback,” Carroll told reporters. “He is so prepared, he does not seem like a first-year quarterback.”

There’s little doubt that Wilson -- who also has beaten out incumbent starter Tarvaris Jackson, who is reportedly being traded to Buffalo -- has been impressive in the preseason.

Especially against the Chiefs, when Wilson went 13 of 19 for 185 yards and two touchdowns (to go with two carries for 58 yards) and led Seattle to scoring drives on its first six offensive series Friday.

“I just try to relax as much as I can -- relax my mind, just play football,” Wilson said after Friday's game. “I prepare myself in every way possible. I get there early. I leave late. I try to always mentally prepare myself and visualize being successful.”

There's something to that visualization apparently.

“[His height] is not even a factor,” Carroll said. “What is a factor is that he is so elusive and shows great sense. … I’ve watched our team respond to him and they’ve taken to his leadership style.”

Flynn has been bothered lately by a sore arm, but apparently, that doesn’t matter. No matter the contract, no matter the acclaim he brought to the team after two (just two!) strong appearances as a fill-in Packers starter, Flynn simply wasn’t good enough to beat Wilson.
