Saints activate rookie DT Sheldon Rankins from IR list
The New Orleans Saints are expected to activate first-round pick DT Sheldon Rankins from the IR on Wednesday.
Rankins was initially placed on the IR list after he suffered a broken fibula during training camp. Wednesday is the first day he is eligible to return to practice under NFL rules. The earliest Rankins can then return to in-game action is Week 9 at the San Francisco 49ers.
The Saints selected Rankins with the 12th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, and the team could greatly use his presence on the defensive end, as they are currently ranked among the league's worst defenses.
Rankins signed a four-year, 12.8 million dollar contract with the Saints in May.
