Saints sign veteran safety Jim Leonhard
The Saints beefed up their secondary Monday with the addition of veteran safety Jim Leonhard. Leonhard spent the 2012 season in Denver and will add experience to a Saints defensive unit that finished 31st against the pass last season.
The Saints defense wasn't just the worst in the NFL last season, it was statistically the worst defense in NFL history. Looking to beef up the unit, New Orleans signed safety Jim Leonhard on Monday, the veteran announced on Twitter.
I got the okay from my agent. New year, new opportunity. We are glad to be joining the New Orleans Saints. twitter.com/jimleonhard/st…— Jim Leonhard (@jimleonhard) April 8, 2013
Leonhard spent last season with the Broncos returning punts and playing safety in dime packages. Despite minimmal playing time on defense, Leonhard finished tied for third on the team with two interceptions.
Last year marked Leonhard's first injury-free season since 2009. As a Jet in 2010, Leonhard missed the final five games of the season after breaking his leg in practice. The next year, he missed the final three games of the Jets' regular season after suffering a torn patellar tendon.
Besides the Broncos and Jets, Leonhard has spent time in Buffalo (2005-07) and Baltimore (2008).
Leonhard has never played under new Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, but he did spend four seasons under Rob's brother Rex. Leonhard was in Baltimore in 2008 during Rex's final year as the Ravens' defensive coordinator, Leonhard then followed Rex to the Jets in 2009 when he was hired as New York's head coach.
