Seattle receiver Percy Harvin, who has missed all season following hip surgery, was ruled out for Monday night’s game after returning to practice this week, but is on target to play in Week 9, according to sources close to the situation.

The Seahawks intend to gradually bleed him into the lineup, given how much time he has missed, and this week, traveling to St. Louis after just practicing for a few days, ultimately led coach Pete Carroll to rule him out. The Seahawks are working closely with Harvin, and their doctors and his rehab specialists to ensure they are not putting the surgically repaired hip in any danger and with just one loss this season the club is erring on the side of caution.

He remains well ahead of the original projection of 12 weeks or more recovery from surgery and next week, against the winless Bucs, Harvin is expected to see action. The Seahawks face teams with a combined three wins between Weeks 9-11, and then have the bye Week 12. So they plan to gradually build Harvin up and have him peaking coming out of their Week 12 bye, when they host the Saints and then travel to San Francisco, games that could ultimately decide their final seeding in the NFC playoffs.

Harvin was acquired from the Vikings this offseason for multiple picks and received a new deal worth just under $13-million a season, making him the third-highest paid receiver in the game. He is explosive in the return game, can line up in the backfield, out wide or in the slot and is one of the most dynamic playmakers in the game.
