Sean Payton says trash talk with Tom Brady has already begun, with new Bucs QB noting he's the 'underdog'

With Tom Brady opting to walk away from his longstanding throne with the New England Patriots and take his talents south to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there was a noticeable shift of power in the NFL. In the AFC East, a division Brady owned, the door has been swung open for the other three teams to shove the Patriots out of the way -- if they can. And in the NFC South, a division mostly dominated by the New Orleans Saints as of late, Brady finds himself entering with the tall task of ending the Buccaneers' losing ways, while Sean Payton reminds him constantly that he's no longer in a division with New York Jets.

Now fully recovered from COVID-19 and in great spirits, the fun-loving and hyper-competitive Payton has already begun poking Brady with a stick. In a recent Instagram Live conversation with NFL Network's Kay Adams, via, the Super Bowl-winning head coach admitted he's wasted no time getting in Brady's ear ahead of the 2020 season.

"Yeah, Tampa Week 1," Payton said. "We want to quiet the cannons. That's what I texted Tom. I said 'Hashtag, keep the cannons quiet.'"

While their friendship goes back quite a ways, they rarely square off on the field by virtue of being in different conferences and have only played against each other on three occasions since Payton took the reins as head coach in New Orleans. Brady won two of the three meetings, but his winning record in the matchup may not last long. For while the Bucs are revamping in a major way under Bruce Arians and with Brady -- along with Rob Gronkowski -- now in tow, the Saints have won the division each of the last three seasons, logged 13 wins in 2018 and 2019 and have arguably upgraded as well with additions like wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

If Brady can defeat the Saints in one or both of their 2020 battles, it'll sound the horn that the Bucs have arrived to pillage and plunder, but the six-time Super Bowl winner is choosing not to give Payton any bulletin board material. Instead, he's playing coy on the matter.

So when Brady saw Payton's latest trash talk text, he responded with humility, accompanied by a smirk.

"He laughs," Payton said of Brady's reply. "He says, 'You guys are the favorites. We're the underdogs.'"

But, of course, Payton isn't buying it. Considering Brady's level of competitiveness matches his own, he knows the former league MVP isn't in Tampa simply for the nice weather. As such, his response was succinct, if not poignant in its own Payton-esque way.

"Blah blah blah."
