Texans might cut a quarterback before training camp
Texans coach Bill O'Brien said on Monday that it's not easy to divide practice reps among four quarterbacks. Could that mean someone's on the way out?
Three's not always a crowd in quarterback competitions, but four definitely is -- and Bill O'Brien seems to understand that. The Texans coach hinted on Monday that Houston could be dumping one of its four quarterbacks sometime in the near future.
"Any time you have four... I don't think it's easy to divide the reps," O'Brien said, via the Housto Chronicle. "I think you can really get three guys reps in practice, which is basically what we've been doing. I know that's probably not the easiest thing for those guys. But three out of four have been getting reps."
Fitzpatrick is probably safe though, mainly because the Texans just signed him in March to a deal that pays him $4 million in guaranteed money. Savage is probably safe too -- because it wouldn't make much sense for the Texans to cut their fourth-round draft pick before the start of training camp.
That would leave either Keenum or Yates as the odd man out. O'Brien offered no hints as to who might be let go.
"These guys have been working extremely hard," O’Brien said of his four quarterbacks. "They’ve all had really good moments. They're very competitive. They've been in this building seven days a week, studying on their own, studying with myself, studying with [quarterbacks coach]George Godsey, mostly. It's a very competitive situation."
