Tony Gonzalez informs Falcons he'll return in 2013
Tony Gonzalez has reportedly been given the 'green light' to talk contract with the Falcons.
The Falcons have waited patiently to find out what Tony Gonzalez would do in 2013, whether it's return to Atlanta for another run at a title or walk away from the game for good. And now they're getting what they want as Gonzalez is going to come back next season.
Jarrett Bell of USA Today reported Tuesday that Gonzalez gave his agent Tom Condon the "green light" to negotiate a new deal and shortly thereafter Jay Glazer of Fox Sports spoke with Gonzalez, who confirmed his return.
"After discussing it with my family and really, truly struggling with this decision I informed the Falcons I would like to return for one more shot," Gonzalez told Glazer.
Over the weekend, a report came out that Gonzo would be willing to come back for another year if he got $7 million and a reduced camp appearance from the Falcons.

That's a very specific set of demands, right? It would make sense that the Falcons, then, are willing to acquiesce to those requests if Gonzo is taking the next step to return.
What the Falcons planned to do this offseason was going to be largely predicated on whether or not Gonzalez is back; if he hadn't returned, they would have needed to improve the tight end position and that would drastically alter their draft and free-agent strategy.
Assuming they can work out a deal with Gonzalez, Atlanta can focus on re-stocking its secondary, finding a pass rusher and locking down its left tackle spot. The Falcons would be smart, though, to work on a solution for the future when Gonzalez eventually departs.
Which, at least for now, doesn't look like it will be 2013 barring the Falcons being unwilling to give Gonzalez what he wants.
