Jamal Adams has requested a trade from the New York Jets, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora has confirmed. The two-time Pro Bowl safety has been with the franchise for three years since being selected with the No. 6 overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. A request for a trade is the latest development in what could only be described as a rocky relationship.
Earlier in the day, in a response on Instagram, Adams directed a response towards the AFC East franchise:
"I have time this morning. DO YALL JUST SPEAK WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING WHAT YALL ARE TYPING? Or nah? Ohhh I see what this is. I deserve to be paid but when I ask to be taking care of I'm "BEING THAT GUY" huh? What does Pat have to do with me? Pat is about to get 40 to 60 M's a year. Well deserved. That's my guy. But don't compare me to QB's if you aren't paying me QB money. [Expletive], if I was about to get 40 plus u wouldn't hear a damn word from me. Lol fr fr. Don't use the pandemic excuse. CM22 [Christian McCaffrey] got paid not too long ago. Well deserved. Great friend of mine. You're lost my guy. Ima protect myself just like an organization will look for themselves at the end of the day. & if you guys don't respect that, cool. It's all luv. Maybe it's time to move on!"
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Adams would prefer a trade to one of seven teams: the Ravens, Cowboys, Texans, Chiefs, Eagles, 49ers and Seahawks. You can read more about potential landing spots here.
Ahead of the trade deadline last year, there were reports that Adams might be available and that his preference would be to play for Dallas, which is a little less than an hour away from his hometown of Lewisville. The Cowboys, despite being in desperate need of an upgrade at his position, were not inclined to pay the hefty price it would cost to acquire him. The player found it difficult to trust the organization after those failed trade attempts and it led to a public spat. The fence was eventually mended which prompted the safety stating his belief that a contract extension would get done.
"Just to clear this up ... we've had small discussions thus far, not in detailed talks yet, just talked about it. With that being said, I fully expect to be extended this offseason. I want to be in New York!" he wrote on Twitter.
New York must not have held up their end of the bargain. Cimini wrote a story towards the end of May claiming that contract discussions had "reached an impasse" and that Adams' representatives felt as though the Jets were "dragging their feet."
Adams has two years left on his rookie contract, including the upcoming 2020 season. He is looking to be paid relative to his worth as one of the best safeties in the league. It does not sound as though the Jets intend to be the team that pays him, however.
The LSU product, who has yet to appear in a playoff game, has missed just two games in his career. Over the course of those three seasons, he has accumulated 273 tackles, 12 sacks, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, two interceptions and one touchdown.
