Video: Texans QB Matt Schaub talks about hit that cost him part of his ear

During last Sunday's win over the Broncos, Texans quarterback Matt Schaub took a vicious hit from Denver linebacker Joe Mays. Schaub not only lost his helmet on the play, he also lost part of his ear. (And Mays lost out on the chance to play in Week 4 -- the NFL suspended him for one game.) CBS Sports' Shannon Sharpe sat down with Schaub this week to talk about his Mike Tyson moment.

"To be honest, I didn't even know [Mays] was coming," Schaub said. "I felt some pressure in my face from someone else, but I didn't feel Joe coming from the left until probably the very last second when I let go of the ball."

Was this the biggest hit that Schaub has ever absorbed?

"I don't know; I've taken some pretty good ones," he told Sharpe matter-of-factly.

As for losing part of his ear, Schaub was practical about it.

"Yeah, it wasn't that vital a body part," he said laughing. "A piece of the ear, you know. It definitely looked the worst when I went back and watched it."

And when Sharpe asked to see the ear, Schaub obliged … with this qualification: "I had a shoot on Tuesday. They put makeup on it, and it didn't come off so you can't really [see the damage]."
