Vikings GM wants to 'redshirt' QB they take in 2014 NFL Draft

The Vikings are one of several teams who will be taking a quarterback at some point early in the 2014 NFL Draft. With two weeks and change until the draft kicks off they aren't saying that, but that's just standard draft subterfuge.

The question is how early the pick will go down. Minnesota GM Rick Spielman, speaking to TheMMQB's Peter King, said "if" the Vikes take a quarterback, they "would want to redshirt him."

“Ideally if we did pick a quarterback this year we would want to redshirt him anyway, and when he’d be ready to go, he’d play," Spielman said. "But he’d probably use this year as a learning year. I can say that now, before our meetings, we’ll have the coaches and scouts speak, but if we are going to consider a quarterback at eight, I better have consensus in the building that this is our guy.

"We all better feel good about one guy."

Much like the Texans at No. 1, the Vikings at No. 8 are doing their best right now to make people think they don't want a quarterback. If it's too obvious you're on one position or player or type of player it makes your leverage in the draft disappear.

So it's no surprise the Vikes want to let everyone know they're not interested in a quarterback.

It is interesting the plan might be to play Matt Cassel or Christian Ponder regardless of who's selected. That sounds kind of, maybe all right now, if you assume the Vikes can grab someone like UCF's Blake Bortles in the first round or maybe Zach Mettenberger of LSU in the second or third round.

Then again, the idea of going with the status quo at quarterback might be exactly what it looks like: a smokescreen to make sure people don't think the Vikings want to take a quarterback at No. 8.

Maybe Spielman is secretly infatuated with someone like Fresno State's Derek Carr -- who Rob Rang mentions as a top-10 possibility -- and wants to make sure, as best he can, that no one knows.
