Vikings QB Josh Freeman (concussion) won't dress Sunday

Josh Freeman suffered a concussion in the third quarter of last Monday's loss to the Giants -- a concussion nobody seemed to know about until Wednesday -- and on Thursday, Vikings coach Leslie Frazier made the determination that Freeman will not play Sunday.

This isn't a surprise. Freeman was never likely to play this Sunday, but Frazier on Thursday also told reporters that Freeman could practice some Friday.

That means Christian Ponder will get the start with Matt Cassel backing him up vs. Green Bay. Considering Freeman was brutal in Minnesota's loss -- a defeat that shouldn't be blamed totally on the new quarterback who clearly was ill-prepared to perform in his new offense -- Ponder is looking forward to his new opportunity to perhaps take back the starting job that used to be his.

"I think it was good for me to kind of take a step back for a couple weeks and take a deep breath and learn from those first three games and get out there and play better," Ponder said, via the "I'm excited for this opportunity. What a great way to come back out against the Packers at home. It'll be fun."

Ponder's plan in Freeman's absence? Be more relaxed.

"I feel like I came out here running the scout team and stuff and practiced relaxed and then came out here running the first team and practiced relaxed, too," Ponder said. "That's going to be big for me. It's been an interesting ride. Obviously it swung away from me, it swings back and it's time to grab a hold of it and not let it swing away from me again.

With the acquisition of Freeman, that might not be possible.
