One of the fun trends that's emerged in the NFL over the last few years is a need to say that every single quarterback falls under some random qualification like "elite" or "Top-10" or whatever. Typically these claims sound pretty ridiculous, but new Buccaneers wide receiver Vincent Jackson took the cake.
Jackson, asked about his new quarterback Josh Freeman , said that Freeman should be "mentioned among the top-five" quarterbacks in the league.
"We were a little more flashy as far as the names go [in Los Angeles Chargers ], but I think we're just as talented here all the way across the board.'' Jackson said, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Times. "We have tight ends, running backs and obviously, Josh Freeman, and he's a quarterback I think should be mentioned among the top five in the league."
Uhhhhh, no. No. Not even close. Not at all.
Freeman is barely a top-five quarterback in his own division. And I love Josh Freeman. I think he's one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the NFL, I think he's going to bounce back from a bad 2011 in a big way and I think the Buccaneers will be much better than last year.
But top five? No way. Aaron Rodgers , Tom Brady and Drew Brees are the "big three." Round that out your top five with some combination of Eli Manning , Philip Rivers , Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger . You're at seven. Then you've still got Tony Romo , Joe Flacco , Cam Newton , Mike Vick and Matt Ryan . It's an absolute force to get Freeman in the top 10 but with a big season he could potentially end up there.
Top five, however, is simply out of the question. It's nice that his newest wide receiver has confidence in him though.
