With David Akers struggling, 49ers sign kicker Billy Cundiff
With David Akers struggling, the San Francisco 49ers signed former Baltimore Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff on Tuesday, according to league sources.
Akers is having the worst season of his 15-year NFL career. The six-time Pro Bowler has made just 29 of 42 field-goal attempts (69 percent). And although he's 19-of-23 (83 percent) from inside 40 yards, he's 9-of-19 (47 percent) beyond 40.
Cundiff has kicked for five teams over the course of nine seasons beginning in 2002. He got into five games with the Redskins during the 2012 season. As a member of the Ravens in 2011, he missed a potential game-tying field-goal attempt from 32 yards in the final seconds of the AFC Championship Game.
The Niners reportedly brought in Justin Medlock, in addition to Cundiff, before deciding on Cundiff.
