WR Andre Johnson to skip Texans mandatory minicamp
Receiver Andre Johnson continues not to be happy with the state of the Texans.
Andre Johnson, who isn't sure he wants to return for yet another Texans rebuilding season, will skip this week's mandatory team minicamp, his advisor and uncle Andre Melton told the Houston Chronicle on Monday.
“Right now, that’s all that he can do,” Melton said. “We’ve done what we can do, so we’re just sitting there waiting.”
If Johnson doesn't show, the team could fine him nearly $70,000. Johnson, who skipped all of the voluntary OTA sessions, also could forfeit his $1 million workout bonus. Melton said he's not sure if Johnson will hold out from training camp, even despite the best efforts of running back Arian Foster.
“Nobody’s been here as long as I have. You just kind of look at things; I’ve been thinking about things this offseason,” Johnson said last month. “And I just kind of wonder sometimes, ‘Is this still the place for me?'"
Johnson is under contract in Houston for the next three seasons, scheduled to make a combined $31.5 million in base salary from 2014-16.
As CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora has written, it doesn't make much sense for Houston to try to trade Johnson.
"[Bill] O'Brien would be sending an awkward message to the rest of his team -- and striking a dangerous tone to begin his NFL coaching career -- by dealing one of his best players just because he is a little unhappy and dared to gripe about it a little bit," La Canfora wrote last month. "That's an awfully slippery slope to start going down so soon. And it runs counter to every fiber of O'Brien's coaching DNA."
Stay tuned. The standoff, it would seem, is not abating.
