Ben Tate: 49ers workout schedule
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Tate will work out for the 49ers on Tuesday, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

Tate has worked out for the Cowboys, Lions and Chiefs at various times this year, which follows a 2014 season in which he played for the Browns, Vikings and Steelers. Although the veteran has yet to play this season, Reggie Bush's knee injury suffered Sunday opens the door for a running back to sign with the 49ers. However, given Tate's recent unsuccessful workouts, it remains to be seen whether he'll be formally offered San Francisco's potentially vacant roster spot.

Ben Tate: Chiefs workout scheduled
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Tate has a workout scheduled with the Chiefs on Tuesday, The Kansas City Star reports.

Tate's workout comes in wake of Jamaal Charles' torn ACL suffered Sunday, leaving the Chiefs' running back corp in need of help. After spending the first three years of his career with the Texans, Tate played for the Browns, Vikings and Steelers over the course of last season, including the playoffs. While he obviously was unable to stick with any of those organizations, Tate's experience makes him a veteran worth consideration from the Chiefs, explaining Tuesday's workout.

Report: Ben Tate, Daniel Thomas to work out for Lions
by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com

Two veteran free agent running backs will work out for the Lions on Tuesday, per a report from NFL.com.

Ben Tate, who has rushed for 2,325 yards in five years with three teams, will fly to Detroit for a tryout, sources say. The 26-year-old Tate played for Minnesota and Cleveland last year.

Daniel Thomas, the 27-year-old running back, will also work out for the Lions. Thomas has played all four years of his career with Miami, rushing for 1,480 yards.

Steelers running backs do little in relief of Le'Veon Bell Saturday
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

Steelers running backs Josh Harris and Ben Tate were able to find little running room in Saturday's 30-17 loss to Baltimore. Harris ran nine times for 25 yards while Tate had five carries for 19 yards.

As a team, Pittsburgh managed just 68 yards on 19 carries in relief of star running back Le'Veon Bell, who missed Saturday's game with a knee injury.

Big Ben: Can't expect much from Ben Tate this week
by Larry Hartstein |

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said it's unrealistic to expect a lot from newly-signed running back Ben Tate in Saturday's playoff game against the Ravens.

“I don’t know how you could come in in a couple of days and learn a new offense,” Roethlisberger told ESPN.com. “I think if we can put together a specific package, a few runs here, a few passes there, I think he could help us if we need him to.”

If starter Le'Veon Bell (knee) can't play, rookie running back Josh Harris would start and be spelled by rookie Dri Archer and Tate. Harris, an undrafted free agent out of Wake Forest, rushed five times for 7 yards Week 17 but had a 59-yard run called back on a penalty.

The Steelers are 3-point home favorites.

Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell: 'I feel great'
by Larry Hartstein |

After walking down the hallway with no discernible limp, Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell stood by his locker Wednesday and told NFL Network, "I feel great." But when asked if that meant he'd play Saturday against Baltimore, Bell replied: "I'm just going to take it day by day."

The Steelers are operating under the assumption Bell won't be available due to his hyperextended knee, though coach Mike Tomlin said the team will "leave the light on" for him. Bell reportedly could barely walk Monday, so he's showing progress.

Pittsburgh signed free agent running back Ben Tate on Tuesday, adding him to the backfield mix with Josh Harris and rookie Dri Archer.

The Steelers are 3-point home favorites Saturday night.

With Le'Veon Bell injured, Steelers sign RB Ben Tate
by Larry Hartstein |

The Steelers announced they signed free agent running back Ben Tate, and he's expected to be in uniform Saturday night when Pittsburgh hosts Baltimore in the playoffs.

The Steelers needed a running back with Le'Veon Bell looking unlikely to play. Bell sustained a hyperextended knee Sunday night against the Bengals.

Tate joins Josh Harris and Dri Archer in the backfield after playing eight games for the Browns and Vikings this year. To make room on the roster, Pittsburgh released wideout Justin Brown.

The Steelers are 3-point favorites over the Ravens.

Tomlin: RB Bell won't necessarily play if medically cleared
by Larry Hartstein |

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said running back Le'Veon Bell rode a stationary bike Tuesday as he tries to recover from the hyperextended knee he suffered Sunday night. Whether Bell plays Saturday night against the Ravens will depend on how he feels and how effective he can be, not on whether he gains medical clearance, Tomlin said, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

If Bell, a superior receiver, can't play, the Steelers could play third downs without a running back, Tomlin acknowledged. Pittsburgh will go with Josh Harris and Dri Archer at running back and might sign free agent Ben Tate, who visited Tuesday.

The Steelers are favored by 3.

Report: Steelers hosting RB Ben Tate
by Larry Hartstein |

With running back Le'Veon Bell (hyperextended knee) uncertain to play in Saturday's playoff game against the Ravens, the Steelers are bringing in running back Ben Tate for a visit Tuesday, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. Pittsburgh is expected to sign Tate if the visit goes well, the report said.

Tate played in eight games for the Browns and Vikings this season, rushing for 333 yards and four touchdowns. As of now, <span data-shortcode="annotation" data-id="1974153" data-text="Josh Harris" data-canon="Josh Harris" data-type="SPORTS_OBJECT_PLAYER" id="shortcode0"> and Dri Archer would be the Steelers' main ballcarriers if Bell can't play.

The Steelers are favored by 3 at most sportsbooks.

Report: Vikings release running back Ben Tate
by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com

The Vikings have released running back Ben Tate, according to ESPN NFL reporter Field Yates.

Tate was picked up by Minnesota after being cut by Cleveland and appeared in three games for the Vikings. He total 13 carries for 38 yards for the Vikings in three weeks of action.

Tate has 371 yards and four touchdowns on the season.

Report: Vikings RB Ben Tate will be active and have role Week 12
by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

Vikings running back Ben Tate will be active and have a role on offense Sunday against the Packers, a source told NFL Network. Tate joined the Vikings just four days ago after being claimed off waivers from the Browns.

The Vikings' backfield is banged up heading into Week 12. Running back Matt Asiata will be sidelined due to a concussion, while running back Jerick McKinnon is listed as probable due to a lower back injury.

Norv Turner says Jerick McKinnon is 'our running back'
by Larry Hartstein |

Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner clarified the team's backfield situation Thursday, and it was good news for rookie Jerick McKinnon. Turner said the team claimed running back Ben Tate because of injuries at the position and that Tate was not brought in to take McKinnon's job.

"Obviously, we're in a situation where [Wednesday] we had one back that could practice, so the timing of [Tate] being released and the opportunity for us to add a back, certainly it was good timing," Turner told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

"We're excited about Jerick and what he's done, and I see him as our running back," Turner added.

McKinnon did not practice Wednesday due to a back injury, but is expected to be fine for Sunday's game against the Packers. Running back Matt Asiata's status is in doubt after he suffered a concussion Week 11, Turner told the paper.

Report: Vikings claim former Browns RB Ben Tate
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The Vikings have claimed deposed Browns featured back Ben Tate off waivers in the wake of the suspension that has sidelined Adrian Peterson for the rest of the season, according to multiple reports.

Tate proved disappointing after signing a free agent contract with Cleveland. He expressed dissatisfaction after losing playing time to rookies Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. He had just two carries for minus-9 yards in the Sunday loss to Houston, which led to the Browns placing him on waivers.

Another rookie now stands in his way of significant reps. It remains to be seen how much Tate plays with Minnesota, which has been featuring Jerick McKinnon in the backfield. McKinnon is averaging 4.9 YPC this season. Tate has just 90 yards in his last 53 carries for a 1.7 YPC average during that stretch.

Report: Colts 'appear interested' in RB Ben Tate
by Larry Hartstein |

Down to two healthy running backs, the Colts have "begun researching running back Ben Tate -- including his character and potential fit in Indy's scheme -- and appear interested in possibly claiming him off waivers from the Browns," reports ESPN.com.

Cleveland waived Tate on Tuesday as the Browns opted to move forward with rookies Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West. Tate averaged 3.1 yards per carry but scored four touchowns in eight games.

Indy just lost running back Ahmad Bradshaw to a fractured fibula. Trent Richardson and Dan Herron are the only remaining backs on the Colts' active roster.

Cutting Ben Tate not necessarily a sure thing
by Chris Towers | Fantasy Writer

Your kneejerk reaction to finding out that Ben Tate has been waived by the Browns will be to cut bait with Tate. With just a few weeks left until the playoffs and waivers set to run Tuesday night, that is a totally defensible decision to make.

However, you shouldn't just rush out to drop Tate for anyone. There are enough teams out there with running back issues that it wouldn't be a surprise to see him catch on quickly. The Colts are an obvious candidate after Ahmad Bradshaw's leg injury, but there are several teams who could be in the market for running back help, so he should find work soon.

Tate was a big disappointment after signing a free agent contract with the Browns, rushing for just 3.1 yards per carry in eight games. Still, he has shown enough prior in his work with the Texans to justify a spot on an NFL roster, and that means he might still have Fantasy value. With how fungible running backs are, and how quickly their fortunes can turn around, hanging on to Tate for another week or so to see where he lands might not be the worst idea, if you can spare the roster spot.

Browns waive running back Ben Tate
by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

The Browns announced Tuesday they waived running back Ben Tate, who was in his first season with the team. Tate signed a two-year deal with Cleveland in the offseason.

Tate rushed for 333 yards and four touchdowns on 106 carries in eight games. He also had nine catches for 60 yards.

However, his role in recent weeks has diminished as Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West have seen their playing time increase. Tate expressed his frustration last week when he said he would "be lying" if he was satisified with the Browns' three-back rotation, according to Cleveland.com.

Browns coach Pettine addresses Isaiah Crowell's surprise start
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Browns coach Mike Pettine addressed Isaiah Crowell's surprise start in Week 11 against Houston during his Monday news conference, per the Akron Beacon Journal.

"Crowell was a guy that had practiced well, we felt really good about where he was and progress he made," Pettine said.

Crowell registered 14 of Cleveland's 24 carries and played 51 of 77 offensive snaps on Sunday. He finished with 61 rushing yards. Ben Tate played only 16 snaps and Terrance West logged 10 snaps.

When asked if there was an attitude issue with Tate, Pettine responded with, "nothing that I would speak on here."

Isaiah Crowell takes the wheel for Browns' running game
by Chris Towers | Fantasy Writer

The roulette wheel that is the Browns backfield landed on Isaiah Crowell in Week 11, as Terrance West and Ben Tate took a back seat in a 23-7 loss to the Texans.

Crowell got the bulk of the work Sunday, as he picked up 14 of the team's 24 carries Sunday, while hauling in the only two passes the team's backs had in the game. He rushed for 61 yards and had 91 all-purpose yards overall, though he also lost a fumble, his second lost fumble of the season.

Crowell, the undrafted rookie, has been the team's best option this season out of the backfield, though he had been limited to reserve work prior to Sunday's game. He leads the team in yards per carry and touchdowns, and it will be interesting to see whether they continue to look his way more down the stretch.

At this point, the Browns' backfield is a nightmare for Fantasy owners, so hopefully they can settle one lead back moving forward. For now, each player has his value, but none make sense as starters.

Browns RB Ben Tate continues to struggle Sunday
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

The regression of Browns running back Ben Tate went full speed ahead Sunday against Houston.

He did not get the start against his former team. And when he did get the ball, he went in reverse. Tate lost three yards on his first attempt and six on his second. He also committed a costly penalty down the stretch.

Tate said after the game, however, that he was more upset with the defeat than with his lack of reps.
