Saints' George Johnson: Re-ups with New Orleans
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Saints signed Johnson to a one-year contract extension Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

Johnson made an instant impact for the Saints after signing with New Orleans in late December, racking up 2.5 sacks in the final three games of the regular season. The 30-year-old was set to become a free agent at the start of the new league year, but the Saints were apparently eager to lock him up on a short-term deal before he hit the open market.

Johnson signed a contract Tuesday with the Lions.

Johnson appeared in four games with the Lions earlier this season before being cut loose prior to the team's bye week. Lions' George Johnson: Joins Lions
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Johnson signed a contract with the Lions on Wednesday.

Johnson spent the 2016 season on injured reserve with the Buccaneers and was released prior to Week 1 earlier this month. The 29-year-old will hope to replicate his 2014 season in Detroit when he had 29 tackles (23 solo) and six sacks, but he more likely will serve as a rotational piece on the defensive line.

George Johnson: Released by Bucs
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Johnson was released Friday by the Buccaneers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

It was George's second stint with the team, but after failing to record a single sack in each of his last two seasons, he was simply a depth option on the defensive line. He'll now likely start the regular season on the free-agent market.

Buccaneers' George Johnson: Placed on IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Johnson has been placed on IR after injuring his hip in Thursday's practice.

Johnson played in 11 games for Tampa Bay last year, recording 23 tackles in two forced fumbles while seeing the field for 39.4 percent of the teams defensive snaps. It's unclear what exactly his hip injury is at this point, but it was enough for the team to officially end his season just a day after the injury. With him out, look for Cliff Matthews and Jacquies Smith to see some extra reps with the second unit.

George Johnson will remain in rotational role with Bucs
by Michael Hurcomb | CBS Sports Staff

Buccaneers defensive end George Johnson appeared in a career-high 16 games in 2014 for the Lions, but he made no starts. He mostly was a rotational pass rusher last year, but the job seemed to suit him well, as he totaled a career-best six sacks.

Bucs defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier likes how the Lions used the four-year NFL veteran and it appears likely his role won't change heading into 2015.

"No question we would like to have a good rotation across the line, so when we get to the fourth quarter our best guys are on the field in those key situations," Frazier said, per the team's official website. "We don’t want to put George in a situation where he has to play 80 percent of the downs nor do we want even Gerald [McCoy] to play 80-90 percent of the downs. We would like to have enough depth where when we do take guys off the field to get a blow, we don’t have a big drop off.

"Hopefully this year we will have the depth to do that. That includes George. I think he had [about] 600 snaps a season ago, so he may end up right around that range, again, a little bit more. That will probably depend on how well the other guys are playing around him as well."
