Alterraun Verner: Officially retires
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner announced via his Instagram that he officially has retired from the NFL.

Verner, who hasn't played in the league since 2017, ends his career with 371 solo tackles, 74 passes defensed, 15 interceptions and seven forced fumbles. A Pro Bowler in 2013, Verner spent his first four seasons with the Titans before spending the next four years with the Buccaneers and Dolphins.

Dolphins' Alterraun Verner: Will sit out Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner (hamstring) is listed as inactive for Sunday's game against the Bills.

Despite a full practice Thursday, the Dolphins opted to rest Verner as to not risk an aggravation in a game without playoff implications for the Dolphins. In his place, expect Bobby McCain and Torry Mctyer to fill in at cornerback.

Dolphins' Alterraun Verner: Full practice Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner (hamstring) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.

Verner was limited in practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury he sustained last week against the Chiefs. However, his full participation in practice Thursday puts him firmly on track to play in the season finale Sunday against the Bills.

Dolphins' Alterraun Verner: Exits with hamstring injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner injured his hamstring and is considered questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Chiefs.

The Dolphins were already playing without starting cornerback Cordrea Tankersly (ankle), and Verner's absence will further diminish their depth at the position. The severity of Verner's injury isn't clear.

Dolphins' Alterraun Verner: Signs with Miami
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner was signed by the Dolphins on Tuesday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Verner was released by the Buccaneers in February after notching a career-low 16 tackles in 16 games throughout the 2016 season. He added just 11 total passes defensed and two interceptions during the last two seasons combined. He'll have a solid shot at making the Dolphins' final roster, but Byron Maxwell (ankle), Xavien Howard and Bobby McCain will likely be ahead of Verner on the Week 1 depth chart.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Will be released Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner will be released by the Buccaneers on Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Verner would have been owed $6.5 million in 2017. He saw a reduced workload in 2016 compared to his first two seasons in Tampa Bay, recording only 16 tackles compared to 76 and 56 in 2014 and 2015, respectively. A big reason for this regression was the emergence of rookie Vernon Hargreaves, who took over as the starting corner opposite Brent Grimes last season and racked up 76 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble. Verner still has value as a defender, and should find himself on an NFL roster come September.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Returns to practice Friday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner (personal) returned to practice Friday, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports.

The veteran corner returned to the team after missing the first two practices of the week due to his father's funeral services in California. While he should be able to suit up against the high-octane Saints passing attack Sunday, rookie Javien Elliott would be available to step in for him if necessary.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Will return to practice Friday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner is expected to be absent from practice until Friday as he tends to personal matters, Jenna Laine of ESPN reports.

Verner is coming off of his first start since Week 2 in Sunday's win over the Chargers. He tallied two tackles in the victory. While his absence from practice will certainly affect his preparation for Week 14, he figures to return to his usual role with the club.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Grabs interception in tribute Week 12 effort
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner (personal), who lost his father on Friday, was credited with two solo tackles and also picked off Russell Wilson in Sunday's 14-5 win over the Seahawks.

The veteran was playing with a heavy heart but had pledged to dedicate the game to his late father, and he came through with a fitting tribute. Verner picked off a late second-quarter pass intended for Paul Richardson at the Bucs' 15-yard line, returning it 16 yards and denying Seattle a field goal attempt at a minimum. It was the seventh-year pro's first interception of the season, as he continues to serve as the third corner behind starters Brent Grimes and rookie Vernon Hargreaves.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Will play Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner (personal) will suit up Sunday against the Seahawks, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Questionable to play
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner (personal) is questionable to play Sunday against the Seahawks, ESPN reports.

Verner missed every practice this week due to personal matters. If he's unable to play, Josh Robinson is likely in store for additional playing time.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Continues impressing Monday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner, who has enjoyed a strong camp to date, made a number of impressive plays in Monday's session, the team's official site reports.

The veteran corner continues to enjoy a resurgent start to camp, making his presence felt on multiple occasions Monday. Verner separated running back Charles Sims from the ball on one play, and followed up by recovering the loose ball and returning it. He also broke up numerous passes in seven-and-seven and team drills, and looks to be a different player from the one that lost his starting position at one point in 2015.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Making most of clean slate in camp so far
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner, who picked off a deep pass from Jameis Winston in Sunday's practice and came close to another interception, is grateful to still be on the roster after an up-and-down 2015, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The veteran was preparing himself for a possible release following a mediocre 2015 campaign that saw him shuffle in and out of the starting lineup, but received a reprieve of sorts when former head coach Lovie Smith was unexpectedly dismissed. The change brought about a new coaching staff, and with it, a clean slate for Verner. It also eventually led to a reunion with his former defensive backs coach Brett Maxie, who had helped guide Verner to a Pro Bowl campaign in 2013 when both were with the Titans. The second chance and new talented secondary teammates Brent Grimes, Josh Robinson and first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves have Verner excited, and having a familiar face on the coaching staff is particularly important as well. "Maxie being here is going to have a strong indication of the type of player I was, how to work with me and get through to me," Verner said. "It's more that comfort level. I know how to approach him, what he's doing to demand. It's definitely fun to have a familiar face, but it's not going to keep him from challenging me. He's know what I can do, so he's not going to settle for anything less."

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Likely to drop to second unit with signing of Brent Grimes
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner could shift to the second unit or be primarily utilized as a nickel corner with the signing of Brent Grimes, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Verner appears destined to play a reduced role, considering Grimes' Pro Bowl pedigree, familiarity with defensive coordinator Mike Smith's system, and two-year, $13.5 million dollar contract. Verner had already been demoted for a stretch in 2015, losing his starting left cornerback job before regaining it in November. After grabbing 11 interceptions over the first four years of his career in Tennessee, Verner has only managed three picks over his first pair of campaigns in Tampa. He finished the 2015 season with 56 tackles (45 solo), an interception, 0.5 sacks, four passes defensed and a forced fumble.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Active Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner (foot) is listed as active Sunday versus the Cowboys, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

Verner is coming off his most productive contest of the season, which included eight solo tackles and one interception of Eli Manning last Sunday. In Week 10, Verner will seek to replicate that line against Matt Cassel.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Probable for Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.

Despite his sizable contract and league-wide reputation, Verner is merely working as the nickelback in one of the NFL's worst secondaries. He'll presumably be released at the end of the season.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Gets in limited practice Thursday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner (foot) was able to practice on a limited basis Thursday, Joe Kania of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

It was an upgrade in activity level and a positive sign overall for the veteran corner, who had missed Wednesday's session entirely. Verner's play over the last several weeks has certainly been an improvement over his early-season performances, and his veteran savvy would come in particularly handy in a Week 10 matchup versus a very salty Dez Bryant. Friday's practice report should provide an even clearer indication of Verner's status for Sunday.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Misses practice Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner (foot) missed practice Wednesday, Joe Kania of the Buccaneers official site reports.

Verner has considerably picked up his play in recent weeks, but may be in danger of missing Tampa's Week 10 tilt against the Cowboys. The sixth-year pro's injury stems from the Bucs' Week 9 loss to the Giants, and could provide Sterling Moore with an opportunity to start in Week 10. Verner's status will be updated after Thursday's practice session.

Buccaneers' Alterraun Verner: Totals eight tackles and interception in Week 9 loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Verner posted eight tackles (all solo) and snatched an interception in Sunday's 32-18 loss to the Giants.

Verner undeniably struggled early in the season, to the extent that he was temporarily displaced from his starting left cornerback position. However, the sixth-year pro has regained his job and has been a different player overall over the last four weeks, tallying 24 tackles (19 solo), a tackle for loss, a half sack, and the interception he snatched Sunday. The pick was his first since Nov. 30 of last year versus the Bengals, and came when Verner stepped in front of an Eli Manning pass intended for Odell Beckham, Jr. Verner and the rest of the Bucs secondary face another tough challenge in the form of Dez Bryant in their Week 10 tilt against the Cowboys.

Bucs' Alterraun Verner on No. 1 pick: 'I probably like' Jameis Winston
by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Buccaneers cornerback Alterraun Verner made an appearance on NFL Network on Thursday morning and was asked for his preference between the top two quarterback prospects in this April's draft. Although the UCLA grad has seen more of Oregon's Marcus Mariota because he is a Pac-12 guy, he gave the edge to Florida State's Jameis Winston for his team's No. 1 pick in the draft, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

"It's tough. I probably like Winston, from a lot of stuff I've been hearing, a lot of things I've been seeing and things like that," he said. "It's hard for me to go 100 percent there, because I haven't seen him really play. I'm going more on hearsay and things around. From his leadership qualities, that's what I've been hearing a lot. As a quarterback, you want to have that strong leader in the locker room and on the field. Somebody you know you can go out and you feel like you can do anything. From what I hear, that's the type of guy Jameis is. Like I said, the other options are good, too."
