The Saints placed Hunter (undisclosed) on injured reserve Friday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Hunter came down with an unknown injury in Thursday's practice, which was serious enough to impact his Week 17 availability. Instead, the Saints will trust in Tim Hightower and Travaris Cadet to head the backfield in Sunday's season finale at Atlanta.
The Saints signed Hunter on Wednesday, Evan Woodbery of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Hunter enters a backfield that has been hammered by injuries this season. Among those on injured reserve are Mark Ingram (shoulder), Khiry Robinson (leg), and Marcus Murphy (ankle). While Hunter's last NFL carry occurred in 2013, he could spell Tim Hightower when he requires a respite over the last three games.
Running back Kendall Hunter (undisclosed) and the 49ers agreed to terms of an injury settlement Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
After the preseason slate wrapped up, Hunter was suddenly placed on season-ending injured reserve. With an injury settlement in his back pocket, he has the ability to re-sign with the 49ers once he reaches the conclusion of the settlement, likely in six weeks' time.
49ers running back Kendall Hunter will not play in 2015 after being placed on injured reserve, the team announced. Hunter was dealing with a knee injury.
After missing the entire 2014 season with a torn ACL, 49ers running back Kendall Hunter appears to be over the injury, reports the team's official website.
"He's coming along great," coach Jim Tomsula said. "I think we all have strong feelings for Kendall… but we definitely have a rep count on him. You've got to keep him corralled, but he's moving around really quick."
While Kendall is still receiving treatment on the knee, he said it's mostly just for maintenance purposes.
"Once you hurt something, you nurse it even if it isn't hurt," he said. "Just to stay healthy and be ready to go."
From 2006 through last year, there was no question about who would assume the featured back role for the 49ers.
It was Frank Gore. Period.
Times have changed. Gore has moved on to Indianapolis. Second-year back Carlos Hyde is his heir apparent, but the job will not be handed to him on a silver platter. The team added Reggie Bush in free agency, drafted Mike Davis in the fourth round and still has Kendall Hunter.
The latter is intriguing. He sat out 2014 with a torn ACL, but rushed for more yards in each of his first three seasons than the 333 Hyde recorded last year. And Hunter is fully recovered.
"He's coming along great," Jim Tomsula told CSNBayArea.com. "I think we all have strong feelings for Kendall. You see him out there moving. He's moving around great. But we definitely have a rep count on him. ... You've got to keep him corralled. But he's moving around really quick."
Hunter has 1,202 yards (4.6 average) and seven touchdowns in 43 career games.
Tomsula believes the 49ers are covered at running back no matter who emerges to earn the bulk of the work.
"I'm not talking depth charts or anything right now, but they're all getting after it."
All except Hyde, who has been sidelined for a couple weeks with a minor pull in his leg (not his hamstring). Tomsula said if it were the regular season, he would be active.
Running back Kendall Hunter is eight months into his rehab from an ACL tear. He's able to run again and is working out with the 49ers.
"We have Kendall coming back, who a lot of people forget about," quarterback Colin Kaepernick said, per the Sacramento Bee.
The 49ers didn't sign running back Reggie Bush to be "a gadget guy," coach Jim Tomsula told reporters, per the San Jose Mercury News. "Reggie Bush is a running back, and I’m really excited about Reggie joining the crew."
Added Tomsula: "Reggie can be an every down back. He’s done that in the NFL, OK? I don’t know [that] we’re looking that way. Reggie is a very good space player, OK? Reggie can, it’s well documented, his skil set on third down. Reggie, I mean, he’s a running back.”
Bush joins Carlos Hyde and Kendall Hunter in the backfield. The 30-year-old Bush was released after two seasons with the Lions.
49ers running back Kendall Hunter signed a one-year contract extension through the 2015 season, the team announced. Hunter is on IR recovering from a torn ACL.
49ers running back Kendall Hunter (knee) went unclaimed on waivers, so he reverted to injured reserve Tuesday. He will miss the 2014 season due to a torn ACL.
The 49ers waived No. 2 running back Kendall Hunter, who's out for the year with a torn ACL, reports the Sacramento Bee. Hunter will revert to IR if he clears waivers.
San Fran is expected to add another running back, the report said.
San Francisco running back Kendall Hunter will likely miss the 2014 season with an ACL tear sustained in practice Friday, per the Sacramento Bee. His knee buckled after catching a pass.
Hunter contributed 358 yards and three touchdowns a year ago. His absence could mean more playing time for 49ers second-round pick Carlos Hyde.
Despite the attention drawn by rookie Carlos Hyde and second-year pro Marcus Lattimore, running back Kendall Hunter remains the favorite to back up Frank Gore, reports CSNBayArea.com. The 49ers trust him in pass protection and he's averaged 4.6 yards per carry in three seasons backing up Gore.
"Until Hyde or Lattimore prove themselves, the 49ers’ coaching staff is going to stick with Hunter because they know he can be trusted," the report said.
Hunter is entering the last year of his rookie deal.
While veteran running back Frank Gore has been watching OTA practices this week, the 49ers have given first-team reps to Kendall Hunter according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
"Kendall looks good," linebacker Patrick Willis said. "I've always been a fan of his since he came in. Him and Frank in that backfield, those two are very dangerous. (Kendall) is quick. He told me today, he said, 'Pat, you're everywhere.' I said, 'I've got to be when you're back there, you move fast.' I know he's going to be a big-time contributor for us this year."
Kendall Hunter likely will be the 49ers' No. 2 running back behind Frank Gore, at least for the first half of the season, reports the Sacramento Bee. The paper expects Hunter to remain ahead of Marcus Lattimore and second-round rookie Carlos Hyde.
Lattimore sat out last season while rehabbing from a devastating knee injury. "The 49ers still don't know exactly what they have in Marcus Lattimore," the report said.
49ers running back Kendall Hunter is entering the final year of his rookie deal and warrants consideration for a contract extension, according to CSNBayArea.com. While Hunter played fewer than 20 percent of the offensive snaps last season, he averaged 4.6 yards per carry and "appears to have value to the 49ers in the future" as part of a three-headed monster at running back, the report said.
The 49ers received minor production offensively from role players in Sunday's 23-17 loss the Seahawks in the NFC Championship game.
Kendall Hunter finished as the team's second-leading rusher with 16 yards on three carries (5.3 yards per carry). Vance McDonald and Quinton Patton each finished with one grab. McDonald caught a 13-yard pass from Colin Kaepernick, and was not involved the rest of the way. Patton had a 2-yard reception in the second quarter.
San Francisco running back Kendall Hunter had nine carries against Carolina.
Hunter wasn't a huge part of the game, but helped the team run out the clock late in the game. He finished the game with 27 yards, including a 17 yard run. Hunter will likely get a few carries next week against Seattle.
The 49ers received contributions from several role players during Sunday's win over the Cardinals in Week 17.
Quinton Patton caught two of three passes for 34 yards and had one carry for a gain of 26 yards, which was good enough to lead the team in rushing. Kendall Hunter had two carries for 13 yards while Anthony Dixon rushed for minus-5 yards on two carries and caught two passes for 27 yards. Offensive lineman Joe Staley also had one catch for a 14-yard gain while LaMichael James caught his only targeted pass for 12 yards. Garrett Celek was targeted once but finished without a grab.
49ers backup running back Kendall Hunter broke off a 45-yard run late in the win over Atlanta. He finished with three carries for 51 yards, his highest yardage total since Week 8.
Hunter was not targeted in the passing game. He'll visit the Cardinals in Week 17.
