Chris Jones: Let go by Cowboys

The Cowboys released Jones (abdomen) on Wednesday, The Dallas Morning News reports.

Jones was placed on injured reserve Nov. 7 after undergoing core-muscle surgery. It's uncertain if he's healthy yet, but the Cowboys ultimately chose to move on from Jones, saving $2 million in salary-cap space as a result. Jones has played 126 games for the Cowboys since his rookie season in 2011, averaging 44.5 yards per punt for his career.

Jones (abdomen) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, Rob Phillips of the Cowboys' official site reports.

After suffering multiple abdominal injuries over the years, Jones is finally undergoing surgery and will be placed on IR. Rookie Hunter Niswander will make his NFL debut and take over Jones' role as the Cowboys' punter until the 31-year-old recovers from his procedure, which could take at least a few weeks.

Jones has battled abdominal injuries in the past, and he'll finally require a procedure with the hope that it provides a permanent fix. The Cowboys are expected to promote Hunter Niswander from the practice squad to handle punting duties as long as Jones is sidelined.

Jones has been the Cowboys' starting punter since 2013 and will be expected to carry the punting torch through at least the 2021 season. Through six seasons, Jones has recorded a net average of 40.9 yards per punt.

The Cowboys have given low tenders to running back Lance Dunbar and punter Chris Jones, according to  Each tender is worth $1.542 million.  

Should either player sign with another team, the Cowboys will not receive any compensation due to both Dunbar and Jones coming into the NFL as undrafted free agents.  

Dunbar spent his time as the third-down back for the last two seasons, bringing in 18 receptions for 217 while carrying the ball 29 times for 99 yards.

Jones finished the 2014 season with an average of 45.4 yards per punt.

Cowboys sign Tom Hornsey

The Cowboys reached agreement on a contract with punter Tom Hornsey , according to MMQB's Robert Klemko.

The Australian-born Hornsey won the Ray Guy Award for top college punter in 2013. He was with the Cowboys for two weeks in training camp last season. 

Hornsey provides insurance for the Cowboys. 2014 punter Chris Jones is a restricted free agent.

Patriots fairly healthy heading into Super Bowl Sunday

The Patriots will be at nearly full strength for Sunday’s Super Bowl as the following players have been listed as probable: Tom Brady (ankle), Dont’a Hightower (shoulder), Chris Jones (elbow), Akeem Ayers (knee), Darrelle Revis (non-injury-related) and Sealver Siliga (foot).

All except Brady were limited participants in practice Friday. The only question mark is center Bryan Stork, who is questionable with a knee injury and was limited in practice Friday.

The Patriots are currently 1-point favorites against Seattle.

Patriots list inactives for AFC Championship

The Patriots have listed DL Chris Jones, DE Zach Moore, WR Brian Tyms, WR Josh Boyce, C Bryan Stork, OL Jordan Devey and RB James White as inactive for the AFC Championship game.

Jones and Stork were the only two players listed on the injury report coming into the contest. Jones was considered probable due to an elbow injury. Stork was ruled out due to a knee issue. The other five players listed are considered healthy scratches.

As the Patriots gear up for Sunday's AFC Championship game vs. Indianapolis, the team has listed linebacker Dont'a Hightower (shoulder), wide receiver Brandon LaFell (shoulder, toe) and cornerback Brandon Browner (knee) as questionable on the injury report. All three players were limited in practice Friday.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones (elbow) was the only other Patriots' player listed as questionable. Center Bryan Stork has been ruled out due to a knee injury, while quarterback Tom Brady is probable with an ankle injury.

The Patriots are 6 1/2-point favorites for Sunday's game.

The Texans finalized their 53-man roster Saturday by placing receiver Alan Bonner (hamstring), tackle Brennan Williams (knee), and linebacker Trevardo Williams (knee) on injured reserve. Houston also released defensive lineman Daniel Muir, defensive tackle David Hunter and receiver Michael Smith with an injury settlement.
