Harkey was released by the Rams on Saturday, Jamie Han of the Rams' official site reports.
Harkey evidently didn't make enough of an impression in the preseason to warrant a roster spot. As a vested veteran, he isn't subject to waivers and is eligible to sign elsewhere immediately.
Harkey caught two of three targets for 18 yards during Saturday's preseason win over Oakland.
Harkey wasn't targeted in the first game of the preseason against Dallas, and he played just 13 offensive snaps. He ran with the second-term offense Saturday but was still on the field for only 19 offensive snaps. With Gerald Everett and Tyler Higbee the clear top-two tight ends in the passing attack, Harkey's a long shot to garner fantasy value in 2017. The 27-year-old will likely crack the roster and continue being utilized primarily as a blocker, though.
Harkey (triceps) was removed from the non-football injury list Saturday, Rich Hammond of the Orange County Register reports.
Although he ended last season on IR due to a triceps injury, Harkey didn't actually log one snap in 2016. Now healthy, expect him to contend with Temarrick Hemingway for the third spot on the tight end depth chart in training camp.
