Te'o notched nine tackles (seven solo), a sack and three tackles for losses in Sunday's preseason win against the Chargers. According to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com, Te'o appears to be the front-runner to start at middle linebacker in the Saints' base 4-3 defense.
A former Charger, the Saints took a chance on Te'o who is coming off a torn Achilles, by signing the fifth-year linebacker to an incentive-laden two-year deal this offseason. While injuries have plagued the former Notre Dame star throughout his young career, when healthy, he has been a consistent performer. Te'o may leave the field on passing downs, but as long as he starts and, most importantly, remains healthy, he's a good bet for solid production at a reasonable price in IDP leagues.
Looking to bounce back from a torn Achilles suffered in September, the 26-year-old linebacker will join a Saints defense that seemingly has bigger issues than its linebacking corps. While there appears to be ample competition at the position, the Saints don't have any proven standout performers, which means Te'o should at least have the opportunity to compete for a starting job. He started 34 of his 38 games during a four-year run in San Diego, with injuries limiting him to 13 or fewer appearances each season, though he still averaged 5.8 tackles per game.
Te'o (Achilles) is close to agreeing to a contract with the Saints, ESPN's Dan Graziano reports.
Te'o was restricted to just three games last season due to a torn Achilles, but his potential signing would still figure to help a New Orleans defense in desperate need of improvement. Prior to last year, Te'o totaled at least 60 tackles in each of his first three NFL seasons. Although he's never played more than 13 games in a given campaign, Te'o's career average of nearly six tackles per game is commendable.
It was expected Te'o would be placed on IR after it was announced Monday that he had torn his Achilles. Former Raiders linebacker Korey Toomer will take Te'o's place on the roster, with rookie Jatavis Brown expected to take over as the starting inside linebacker opposite Denzel Perryman.
Te'o suffered a torn Achilles during Sunday's loss to the Colts and will now miss the remainder of this season, ESPN's Dan Graziano reports.
Te'o's Achilles injury was confirmed Monday morning, dealing the Chargers yet another crushing blow to start this season. With Te'o destined for surgery and the sideline for the rest of 2016, teammate Denzel Perryman's IDP value should experience a significant uptick, with rookie Jatavis Brown another candidate to help fill Te'o's lost production.
