Williams was cut by the Chargers at the start of September after an uneventful preseason. The team likely added Williams to bolster its backfield depth, with second-string running back Branden Oliver (hamstring) ruled out for Sunday's game against the Giants. The 2014 fourth-round pick will likely see a limited role behind Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler against his former team Sunday.
Williams was waived by the Chargers on Saturday, Jack Wang of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Williams took 18 carries for 87 yards in a Week 17 spot start last year, but he fell down the depth chart this offseason when Branden Oliver came back strong from a torn Achilles' tendon. Oliver will serve as Melvin Gordon's top backup, with undrafted rookie Austin Ekeler rounding out the depth chart.
Williams finished Sunday's preseason loss to the Saints with 11 carries for 23 yards.
Williams registered the most carries on the team, but all of them came in the second half along with the second-and-third string units. The former Giants' castoff seems firmly entrenched behind starter Melvin Gordon and backup Branden Oliver, but there's still a chance for Williams to earn a roster spot, with main competition for the No. 3 role, Kenneth Farrow, injuring his ankle in the later stages of Sunday's contest.
A 2014 fourth-round selection, Williams was released by the Giants prior to Week 1 of last season. He then caught on in San Diego, where he was either a healthy scratch or a practice squad member until Week 17, when injuries higher up the depth chart gave him the opportunity to take 18 carries for 87 yards. Williams likely will have to compete for a roster spot in training camp.
Williams ran for 87 yards on 18 carries in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs.
Williams took the lion's share of carries in his first bit of work of the 2016 season, just days after being elevated from the practice squad. The third-year player never caught on in New York's running-back carousel after being a fourth-round pick by the Giants, but could be worth holding onto in San Diego. He displayed the same kind of bruising style on Sunday that helped him rush for 2,177 yards as a senior at Boston College in 2013.
