Report: Jonathan Martin (back) retiring from football
by Elliot Smith |

Former Dolphins and 49ers offensive lineman Jonathan Martin, who played a major role in Miami's bullying scandal, is retiring from the NFL due to a back issue that will require surgery, a source told insider Ian Rapoport.

Martin was waived by the 49ers in March and picked up by the Panthers; however, the back injury would have kept him out of action for the entire season, and Martin decided to call it quits.

Martin left the Dolphins during the 2013 season citing locker room issues that mainly included bullying by teammate Richie Incognito. He was traded to the 49ers, where he was reunited with his former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, starting nine games with the team.

"At this point it is firmly in the past," Martin said. "I want to have a successful career playing football. I'm lucky to have gotten an opportunity here in Carolina."

Differing reports on Jonathan Martin's future with Miami
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

While NFL Network reports that it's "not impossible" for embattled offensive lineman Jonathan Martin to return to the Dolphins, the Miami Herald believes there's no chance of a return. Martin left the team last season citing locker room issues that mainly included bullying by teammate Richie Incognito.

The Herald surmises that several Dolphins players were unhappy with how Martin left the team and that they might not welcome him back. The paper also noted that if the team welcomed Martin back then the message it would send to the roster could be devastating as anyone could just pick up and leave the team without serious repercussions.
