Thomas was signed to the Jets' practice squad Tuesday, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official site reports.
Thomas spent the entire preseason with the Jets but didn't make it past the final cuts. Now on the practice squad, the running back could be called up to the active roster should the team face more injuries in the backfield.
Thomas was released by the Jets on Saturday, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
Thomas was on the bottom of team's depth chart, so this move comes as no surprise. He will look for a new opportunity elsewhere if he does not land on the Jets' practice squad.
The writing appears to written on the wall for Thomas. It's unlikely the Jets will take a plethora of running backs with them to Buffalo for Week 1, so Thomas could be on the outside looking in. It seems that Elijah McGuire has secured the No. 3 spot behing Bilal Powell and Matt Forte for the time being.
