The Browns waived Currie on Thursday.
Currie's dismissal clears a spot on the active roster for wide receiver Josh Gordon, who is set to return from suspension Sunday against the Chargers in what will be his first NFL appearance in almost three years. The reserve safety appeared in the Browns' loss to the Bengals last week, collecting one tackle across 14 special-teams snaps.
Currie, who was cut by the Browns in August on an injury settlement, is now fully healthy after hurting his ankle in the preseason. He'll provide extra depth in the secondary with reserve safety Derron Smith (knee) banged up following the Week 11 loss to the Jaguars.
Currie (ankle) was waived/injured by the Browns on Wednesday.
Currie hurt his ankle during Monday's preseason game against the Giants. While the nature of his injury isn't clear, Currie will likely revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers.
Currie (ankle) did not practice Tuesday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
Entering his third season, Currie has yet to play a regular season snap. He's currently vying for a special teams role, so a quick recovery is essential for a legitimate chance.
