Smith was released Friday by the Steelers, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Smith was signed in late January after spending much of last season on the team's practice squad, but has now been released due to the fact that the Steelers have to cut their roster down to 90 players. He'll look for an opportunity with another team where he can provide depth at the running back position, but Smith is unlikely to play a formidable role in 2017.
Smith signed a reserve/future contract with the Steelers on Tuesday, Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune reports.
Smith spent much of the season on the Steelers' practice squad after being waived with an injury designation from the Chargers in September. He'll look to land a spot at the bottom of Pittsburgh's running back depth chart in 2017.
