Lions' Isaac Nauta: Activated from COVID-19 list
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Lions removed Nauta (illness) from the COVID-19 list Monday.

Nauta joined a list of eight Lions players who were placed on the list earlier in the offseason, but it appears the second-year tight end is healthy well ahead of the season and in time for training camp. In addition to serving as depth at that position, Nauta could be a candidate for some lead blocking should the primary fullback, which was Nick Bawden the last two seasons, miss time in 2020.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Joins COVID list
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Lions have placed Nauta (illness) on the reserve/COVID list, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.

Nauta is one of eight Lions on the list along with offensive stalwarts Matthew Stafford, Kenny Golladay and T.J. Hockenson (ankle). A 2019 seventh-round pick, Nauta spent much of his rookie season on the practice squad before making his pro debut Week 12 and logging snaps in each of the last six games. Even though he's listed as a tight end, he got time at fullback and hauled in two of three targets for 13 yards.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Spent time at fullback
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta served as Detroit's primary lead blocker over the final six games of the 2019 season, Chris Burke of the Athletic reports.

Burke also notes that the Lions "badly want a multifaceted fullback," and their top guy at that position, Nick Bawden (knee), has ended each of the past two seasons on injured reserve due to knee injuries. That's what paved the way for Nauta to serve as the team's lead blocker down the stretch in 2019, and Bawden's recovery from his most recent setback will presumably play a large role in how much time Nauta will see at fullback in 2020. In any case, Nauta's versatility as a blocker and receiver should help his odds of securing a roster spot in advance of Week 1,

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Makes two catches as rookie
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta (hamstring) finished the 2019 season with two catches on three targets for 13 yards over six games.

Detroit took a flier on Nauta in the seventh round of last year's draft and the Georgia product ended up appearing in a handful of games for the team. With incumbent No. 3 tight end Logan Thomas headed for unrestricted free agency, there soon could be an opportunity for Nauta to move up a peg on the depth chart in advance of the 2020 campaign. After all, it seems unlikely that the Lions will again devote significant resources to bring in more competition at tight end.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Done for day
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta (hamstring) was ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Lions.

In a matter of minutes, Nauta was shifted from questionable to out, signaling some severity of the injury. His 2019 season will end with two catches for 13 yards in six games. For the remainder of Week 17, Jesse James and Logan Thomas are the only healthy tight ends on the roster.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Suffers injury Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta (hamstring) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against Green Bay.

It's unclear how Nauta suffered the injury, but the team will likely be cautious with his return considering it's a soft tissue injury. As long as the rookie out of Georgia is sidelined, Jesse James and Logan Thomas are the only healthy tight ends on the roster.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: No targets on seven snaps
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta was not targeted during Sunday's 27-17 loss to Denver.

Naught caught a pass each of the past two games but wasn't even targeted in this one. As the third tight end on a team that wants to run the ball as much as it can, Nauta is no guarantee to see another opportunity in the passing game during the season finale Sunday against Green Bay.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Catches another pass
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta caught one of two targets for 10 yards during Sunday's 38-17 loss to the Buccaneers.

While Nauta set career highs in playing time (12 offensive snaps), targets and receiving yards, that's not saying much for the inexperienced tight end playing in his fourth career regular-season game. As long as Jesse James and Logan Thomas stay healthy, Nauta should remain far away from fantasy lineups.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Snags first career reception
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta caught one pass for three yards during Sunday's 20-7 loss to Minnesota.

Nauta caught his first career pass, but it was only good for a handful of yards. Moreover, the rookie somehow saw less snaps than he has either of the past two games despite T.J. Hockenson (ankle) landing on injured reserve this past week.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Serving as fourth-string tight end
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta logged seven offensive snaps and wasn't targeted during Thursday's 24-20 loss to Chicago.

Nauta made some nice plays as a lead blocker but the majority of his playing time came on special teams, which will likely remain the case as long as T.J. Hockenson, Jesse James and Logan Thomas are healthy enough to play. However, Hockenson might have picked up a leg injury in addition to his pre-exisiting shoulder injury during Thursday's loss. If the first-round rookie is forced to miss time with the Lions now out of playoff contention, it's possible Nauta, a seventh-round pick, could get some looks down the stretch. The Georgia product was a five-star recruit out of high school and might have some untapped potential.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Makes regular-season debut
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta logged 10 offensive snaps but was not targeted during Sunday's 19-16 loss to Washington.

Nauta was signed to the active roster in the aftermath of T.J. Hockenson's sudden appearance on the injury report with a shoulder injury. While he wasn't asked to do much offensively, Nauta could stick around on the active roster as long as Hockenson is operating at less than 100 percent.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Joins Detroit
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta was signed to the Lions' 53-man roster Saturday.

The versatile tight end is expected to be a contributor on special teams, but with the likes of T.J. Hockenson, Jesse James and Logan Thomas all above him on the depth chart, it's unlikely Nauta sees many offensive snaps.

Isaac Nauta: Added to Detroit's practice squad
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta was signed to Detroit's practice squad Sunday, Justin Rogers of the Detroit News reports.

Nauta was part of final roster cuts over the weekend after losing out to Logan Thomas for the No. 3 job at tight end. The rookie is likely on speed dial in case anything happens to Thomas, T.J. Hockenson or Jesse James.

Isaac Nauta: Cut by Lions
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta was waived by the Lions, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Nauta was never able to catch up to Logan Thomas in the battle for the No. 3 tight end job and, despite a somewhat impressive preseason for Nauta, the Lions ultimately decided against rostering a fourth tight end on the final 53-man roster. Detroit is probably hoping it can stash him on its practice squad.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Finds end zone in preseason
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta secured all three of his targets for 45 yards and a touchdown during Thursday's preseason finale against the Browns.

Josh Johnson threw a dime to Nauta on a corner route that ended with the rookie slipping into the end zone for a 20-yard score. While he got shaken up and needed to be escorted off the field at one point, it was a nice overall day for the seventh-rounder and he'll now have to hold his breath to find out if he did enough for Detroit to keep a fourth tight end on the roster. Working in Nauta's favor is that he can serve in a number of roles as more of an H-back.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Makes preseason debut
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta was targeted once but did not record a catch during Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots.

Nauta worked through a rehab regimen during spring workouts, but his availability for the preseason opener confirms he's healthy. While he wasn't able to bring down the only pass sent his way Thursday, Nauta made a solid block on a run play that helped spring running back Ty Johnson for a 17-yard gain. It's possible his potential as a receiver could be put more on display during the remaining preseason games.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Headed for H-back role
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta (undisclosed) is headed for an H-back role, Chris Burke of The Athletic reports.

Nauta (6-foot-3, 244 pounds) is a former five-star tight end recruit with the athleticism to catch, block, and generally move with the ball well in space. While Logan Thomas seemingly made a strong case for the No. 3 job at tight end during spring practices, he might not actually be Nauta's primary competition for a roster spot. Instead, that title could belong to fullback Nick Bawden (knee), who's coming off a 2018 season lost to a torn ACL. Considering both Nauta and Bawden avoided the preseason PUP list despite their recent injuries, it seems both players could be ready to compete from the opening day of training camp.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Tending to injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nauta (undisclosed) has been working through a rehab regimen during spring workouts, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.

It isn't clear what sort of injury Nauta is tending to, or if he entered the league with the injury. If the latter is true, it may explain why he fell to the seventh round of April's draft. In any case, Nauta's limitations during spring workouts aren't the ideal way to begin his professional career, especially with Logan Thomas, a quarterback in college, making strides in his development. Nauta seemingly has more upside than Thomas, though, and it wouldn't be a shock if the Georgia product lays claim to the No. 3 role prior to Week 1.

Lions' Isaac Nauta: Lions grab yet another TE
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Lions selected Nauta in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft, 224th overall.

Nauta's ugly 40-yard dash (4.91) at the combine likely caused such a precipitous fall, as the Georgia tight end was considered a potential Day 2 prospect prior to the poor outing. "Matchup tight end" is a buzz phrase too often used in this day and age, but it's worth pointing out Nauta's collegiate numbers (30 catches, 430 yards in his junior season) seem to reflect a player capable of getting himself open. The Lions clearly seem intent on improving their TE depth chart, as Nauta became the third player at the position to join Detroit this offseason. (Jesse James and first-round T.J. Hockenson are the other two.)
