Panthers' Julius Peppers: Decides to retire
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers announced his retirement from football Friday, David Newton of reports.

Selected second overall in the 2002 draft, Peppers played 266 of a possible 272 games in 17 NFL seasons, ultimately finishing in fourth place on the all-time sacks list (159.5). He also ranks second to only Robert Mathis with 52 career forced fumbles, though the statistic has only been tracked reliably since the early 1990s. The 39-year-old pass rusher was just shy of elite for most of his career, but the combination of longevity, durability and reliability give him a rock-solid case for the Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, the Panthers are left with Mario Addison and not much else at defensive end, a position they likely will address in the early rounds of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: No decision on retirement
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers will take "a couple of weeks" to make a decision on his future in the NFL, David Newton of ESPN reports.

Peppers is said to be "50-50" on whether he will retire or not. Following a five-sack season in 2018, the soon-to-be 39-year-old seems to have something left in the tank.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Posts sack in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers recorded two tackles (both solo), including a sack, in Sunday's loss to the Lions.

Peppers' sack was his second in as many weeks and his fourth on the season. He'd need a strong finish to equal his 11-sack output from a year ago, but his production is impressive given he's 38 years old and seeing a more limited snap count than in years past. Looking ahead, Peppers and the Panthers will face off against the Seahawks in Week 12.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Notches third sack in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers had three tackles (one solo) and a sack in Thursday's blowout loss to the Steelers.

The Panthers struggled to slow down the Pittsburgh offense all evening, with Peppers' sack representing one of only two hits put on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The 38-year-old isn't the consistent force of his younger days, but he has three sacks and two forced fumbles so far to go with 12 total tackles through nine games.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Returns to practice following offseason surgery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers (shoulder) returned to practice Monday, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports.

Monday marked Peppers' first practice of the season due in large part to his offseason shoulder surgery. Coach Ron Rivera also suggested that monitoring the 38-year-old's rest contributed to his elongated absence. Anyhow, Peppers will seemingly ease his way back into the mix and likely won't be heavily relied on during the early portion of the season.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: First practice of offseason
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers practiced Monday for the first time this offseason, Max Henson of the Panthers' official site reports.

Part of the reason Peppers has remained sidelined is because of February shoulder surgery. The other reason is that he's 38 years old and needs to maintain form for the regular season. Peppers continued to defy odds in his 16th NFL campaign, racking up 11 sacks in a reserve role. His snaps will be mainly limited to passing situations again in 2018.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Removed from PUP
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers (shoulder) passed his physical Sunday and has been removed from the PUP list, Bill Voth of the Panthers' official site reports.

Peppers has been recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder and failed his pre-training camp physical. However, less than two weeks later, the defensive end has been medically cleared to return to the practice field. The Panthers are planning on easing the veteran back into the swing of things during training camp in order to ensure he is 100 percent for the start of the regular season.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Lands on PUP list
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers (shoulder) was placed on the Panthers' Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Peppers, who remains on the mend from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder, failed his pre-training camp physical, prompting his placement on the PUP list. There's been no exact timetable provided for his return.

Peppers (shoulder) is expected to be at full health in time for training camp, David Newton of ESPN

Peppers and Luke Kuechly both tore their right labrum and had offseason surgery. Though the veteran DE will be missing the offseason program he isn't expected to be held back once the regular season rolls around. The now 38-year old hasn't shown signs of slowing down too much after recording 11 sacks in 16 games a season ago. He'll be looking to make a large impact on the defense as a rotational player once again in 2018.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Could continue rehab through minicamp
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers (shoulder) will continue rehabbing through OTAs and possibly minicamp, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Charlotte Observer reports.

Pepper is rehabbing a torn labrum in their right shoulder alongside Luke Kuechly, who suffered the same injury last season, on-campus with the Carolina training staff. Peppers, now 38, signed a one-year deal with the Panthers earlier this month after recording 33 tackles, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 16 games last season. Now a rotational defender in Carolina, one wonders when father time will catch up with Peppers, especially coming off shoulder surgery. Still, if he can return to full health, there's no reason to doubt the veteran, who has recorded at least seven sacks for 10 straight seasons.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Staying put in Carolina
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers agreed Wednesday to re-sign with the Panthers on a one-year deal, Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer reports.

The 38-year-old defensive end had 33 tackles, 11 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries last season, extending his remarkable streak to 10 consecutive years with at least seven sacks. He primarily saw the field on passing downs in 2017, playing 50.1 percent of Carolina's defensive snaps. Another double-digit sack campaign is a lot to ask for from Peppers while he plays on only a part-time basis, but the veteran has proven that isn't out of the question. He had shoulder surgery in early February and expects to be back at full strength for the start of training camp.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Carolina or bust
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers (shoulder) is "leaning toward" playing in 2018 but isn't thought to have interest in signing with a team other than Carolina, Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer reports.

Peppers -- who was born in North Carolina and attended both high school and college in the state -- spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Panthers after the team selected him in the first round of the 2002 draft. He was a force to be reckoned with during his time there, earning the 2002 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award along with two first-team All-Pro (2004, 2006) and two second-team All-Pro selections (2008, 2009). After spending the subsequent seven seasons of his career with Chicago and Green Bay, Peppers returned to the Panthers in 2017 and proved he still has plenty left in the tank after tying for the team lead with 11 sacks. While the 38-year-old free agent is approaching what could be his 17th season in the NFL and just underwent shoulder surgery to address an undisclosed injury he's reportedly been playing with for "quite a while," it would seemingly be a mutually beneficial decision for the storied defensive end to return for another season in a role as a situational pass rusher.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Undergoes shoulder surgery
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers underwent surgery on his right shoulder Thursday.

Peppers posted on his Instagram account after the procedure that "everything went smooth," so the expectation is that he'll be at or near full strength when NFL training camps open in the summer. The veteran pass rusher, who will hit free agency this offseason, has yet to announce if he'll return for a 17th NFL campaign. If he does decide to play in 2018, Peppers should have no shortage of suitors interested in signing him to a short-term deal after he racked up 33 tackles and 11 sacks over 16 games while serving in a rotational role for the Panthers last season.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Rises to fourth in sacks
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers finished with 33 tackles (21 solo), 11 sacks, two fumble recoveries and two fumbles forced in 16 games played this season.

Peppers continued to evade father time, as he not only posted his tenth double-digit sack campaign at age 37, but moved into fourth all-time in the category in the process. Clearly still menace off the edge, Peppers tied teammate Mario Addison for the Panthers' team lead, with both players ranking just outside the top 10 league-wide. Peppers can rest assured knowing he's destined for the Hall of Fame whenever he opts to retire, but after such effectiveness, it's worth wondering whether he plans to continue to play as he becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Reaches 11 sacks
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers marked three tackles (one solo) and one sack Sunday against the Buccaneers.

With his 11th sack of the season, Peppers reached his final sack incentive and cashed in on $250,000 -- adding to the $500,000 he earned from his previous sack benchmarks of seven and nine. This is quite a remarkable accomplishment, seeing as he played just 40 of 67 defensive snaps Sunday, and he's been strictly a situational pass rusher all season. With a crucial seeding game against the Falcons on the horizon, expect Peppers to have ample opportunities to add to his sack total.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Sack total up to 10
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers recorded two tackles and 0.5 sacks in Sunday's win over the Packers.

Facing off against his former team, Peppers was able to apply pressure to Aaron Rodgers, notching his 10th sack of the season. Despite playing rotationally for the Panthers -- he logged 54 percent of the team's defensive snaps Sunday -- Peppers continues to make his presence felt on the field.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Tallies sack in win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers notched a sack in Sunday's win over the Jets, which brings his season total up to 8.5.

Peppers had gone two consecutive weeks without a sack but made up for it Sunday. He also had three tackles (one solo) on the day. The veteran saw 38 snaps (54.0 percent) and figures to see a similar workload going forward.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Now fourth all-time in sacks
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers finished with two solo tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in Sunday's 17-3 win over the Buccaneers.

Peppers not only forced a turnover with a strip sack in the second quarter, but in doing so, he moved into fourth all-time with 151 career quarterback takedowns. In this season alone, the 37-year-old already sports 7.5 sacks.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Continues sack streak
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers recorded a sack and forced a fumble during Thursday night's 28-23 loss to the Eagles.

Peppers' first-quarter strip sack continued his streak of three straight games with a quarterback takedown. Through six games, the veteran has totaled 6.5 sacks, making an immediate impact in his return to Carolina.

Panthers' Julius Peppers: Practices without limitations
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Peppers (shoulder) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Steve Reed of the Associated Press reports.

In addition to Peppers, Mario Addison (knee) was also a full practice participant, suggesting that both defensive ends will be available Thursday against the Eagles. Addison will likely assume a starting role, but Peppers will still see plenty of snaps in pass-rush situations. Peppers has already accrued 5.5 sacks through five games, but his lack of consistent tackle counts hurts his IDP value.
