Jets G Willie Colon: 'I'm going to determine my own future'
by Ruben Palacios | CBS Sports Staff

Jets right guard Willie Colon understands the rumblings about how his career is fading away, but he won't let that stop him from fighting for a spot on the team, per Nj.com.

"I understand why people feel that way," Colon said. "My injury report hasn't been the best at times. When people tag that with how old I am, it's easy to say, 'Hey, maybe he should ride off into the sunset.' But I know I have a heart of a lion, and I'm going to determine my own future. I believe I'm the master of my own fate."

Colon is in camp surrounded by much younger players he probably needs to beat out in order to protect his spot on the team.

"Yeah, you do have that sense of anxiety, like, 'Hey, man, this could be the end as a Jet. Or maybe I may be taking my talents somewhere [else],'" Colon said. "I can't think about the what-ifs."

Jets G Willie Colon critical of QB Geno Smith
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Jets guard Willie Colon has a message for underachieving quarterback Geno Smith. And it's quite critical.

"We bought a Porsche. We've given him the keys. He can't crash it," Colon told Sirius XM. "Bottom line, he can't crash it. We need him to be on top of his game."

If Smith has already been on top of his game, the Jets made quite a mistake when they drafted him to be their starter in 2013. The team is 11-18 with him in that role and he owns a career quarterback rating of 71.5.

"Geno's career right now is extremely turbulent," Colon added. "He was never ready to be the starting quarterback of the New York Jets. ... He was thrown into the fire, and he was forced to cook. Everybody knows in this league, to be a quarterback, which is the number one position on the field, it's a maturation process you have to go through.

"... Now, Geno, with that said, has made his mistakes. He's said some things where you look at him like, 'What are you talking about?' But I think that's all about his maturation period."

Jets G Willie Colon fighting to leave NFL on his own terms
by Ruben Palacios | CBS Sports Staff

Willie Colon is very self-aware. He knows 32-year-old linemen, entering their 10th season in the league are often looked at as sparable. He wants to avoid that, per The New York Post.

Colon is working hard this offseason with the Jets, after signing a one-year deal to remain with the team. He knows that the extra work is the only thing that can keep him around.

“I never want to go home and sit on the couch and wonder, ‘Maybe I could have done this better. Maybe I could have prepared a little better;’ I never wanted that feeling,’’ Colon said. “I want to feel like if anything ever happens [getting cut], it wasn’t due to my play, it was a decision that the front office made. I always want to feel like I gave it all I got.’’

The veteran guard has started every game for the Jets the last two seasons.
