Dan Orlovsky: Announces retirement from NFL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Orlovsky submitted a blog post at SportsSpectrum.com on Wednesday indicating that he has decided to retire from professional football.

After failing to win a backup gig with the Rams during training camp, Orlovsky became a free agent and was unable to drum up much interest elsewhere, which likely influenced his decision to step away from the game. The 34-year-old was a veteran of 12 NFL seasons, but only made 23 career appearances over five campaigns, splitting time with the Lions, Colts and Buccaneers.

Dan Orlovsky: Cut by Rams
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Orlovsky was released by the Rams on Saturday, Jamie Han of the Rams' official site reports.

Orlovsky signed with the Rams in July but was only expected to serve as an extra throwing arm for training camp. As a vested veteran, he's immediately eligible to sign with another team.

Rams' Dan Orlovsky: Signs with Rams
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Orlovsky signed a contract with the Rams on Thursday.

Orlovsky's signing gives the Rams three quarterbacks entering training camp. The 12-year veteran spent the past three seasons backing up Matthew Stafford in Detroit, and he'll now compete with Sean Mannion for the backup slot behind Los Angeles starter Jared Goff.

Lions' Dan Orlovsky: Headed for free agency
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Lions informed Orlovsky that he will not be re-signed this offseason, The Detroit Free Press reports.

Over the weekend, Orlovsky was told the team will let his contract expire at the end of the league year in order to go in a different direction at backup quarterback. The main beneficiary in this situation is Jake Rudock, the Lions' sixth-round pick in 2016 who will replace Orlovsky as the No. 2. It isn't clear what sort of market awaits the 33-year-old veteran, but Orlovsky should be able to latch on somewhere due to his serviceability as a second-string signal-caller as well as the veteran presence he can provide a locker room.

Lions' Dan Orlovsky: Not needed in 2016
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Orlovsky didn't attempt a single pass throughout the entire 2016 season.

Nearly every game the Lions played in 2016 was competitive to the very end. In fact, 12 of their 16 total games were decided by seven points or less. Consequently, Orlovsky was never called upon to play in relief of starting quarterback Matthew Stafford and will now go without having thrown a pass in two of his three seasons with Detroit. Set to hit free agency in the offseason, Orlovsky may don a different uniform in 2017.

Lions' Dan Orlovsky: Struggles in second exhibition
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Orlovsky completed eight of 14 passes for 83 yards and an interception in Thursday's preseason game against the Bengals.

Orlovsky was much better in Detroit's first preseason game, and in any case, he doesn't appear to have competition for the top backup job. If the Lions do retain sixth-round rookie Jake Rudock, it will likely just be as the No. 3 quarterback, which usually comes with inactive status on gamedays.

Lions' Dan Orlovsky: Re-signs with Lions
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Orlovsky re-signed with the Lions on Friday, James Jahnke of the Detroit Free Press reports.

The terms of the contract are not disclosed, but Orlovsky will remain in Detroit for at least another season. The 32-year-old has cemented himself as Matthew Stafford's backup, appearing in two games last season.

Lions QB Dan Orlovsky throws for 191 yards in second half Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky completed 21 of 38 passes for 191 yards, with one touchdown and an interception, in Sunday's 42-17 loss to Arizona.

Orlovsky entered the game midway through the third quarter for an ineffective Matthew Stafford, who tossed three interceptions. The backup QB was able to move the ball a bit in the second half, but he did not lead the Lions to a touchdown until the 1:36 mark of the fourth quarter, when he hit Lance Moore on a 13-yard score. Stafford is Detroit's franchise QB, for better or worse, so don't expect Orlovsky to start anytime soon.

Fine game puts Lions QB Dan Orlovsky in lead for backup job
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com

Dan Orlovsky inched ahead of Kellen Moore in the battle for the backup quarterback job with the Lions on Thursday with a strong effort in the second preseason game against Washington, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Orlovsky completed 13 of 17 passes for 118 yards. He engineered two touchdown marches in just two quarters of action.

"He's had very good performances," Jim Caldwell said. "Dan is, obviously, a guy that has real good understanding of systems, does a good job in terms of the leadership and he's effective. So he's doing a good job. (But) this is Game 2, so we've got a little ways to go."

Lions re-sign QB Dan Orlovsky to one-year deal
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

The Lions have re-signed quarterback Dan Orlovsky to a one-year deal, per the team's website.

Orlovsky will return to a backup role behind starter Matthew Stafford. Originally drafted by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2005 draft, Orlovsky has attempted 472 career passes. He's made 12 starts in his career, with seven coming for the Lions in 2008 and five for the Colts in 2011.

Dan Orlovsky doesn't want to rehash the past
by Larry Hartstein |

Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky, who's back with the team after his 2005-08 stint, doesn't like to relive the 0-16 season in 2008. Orlovsky punctuated that debacle by running out the back of his own end zone for a safety.

“There’s not much I can say to unmask the things that happened or erase those things,” Orlovsky told the Detroit Free Press. “My personal aspect of it is I knew I played well. We were just not a good football team. Did I have a part of that? Sure. I wish I played better in certain spaces, but I knew I played well, and I kind of look at it like this: It’s hard to play in this league for four years. It’s really, really hard to play in it for 10 years.

“I get the fears maybe with obviously fans and whatnot, but the organization knows what they’re doing, and I know I’m a good player, and I certainly hope to just be part of changing some of that past, whether it’s directly or indirectly.”

Orlovsky replaced Shaun Hill as Matthew Stafford's backup.

Lions continue search for backup quarterback
by Larry Hartstein |

Lions coach Jim Caldwell said "all options are open" when it comes to finding a backup quarterback. Shaun Hill signed with the Rams, leaving only Kellen Moore behind Matthew Stafford.

Moore has not appeared in a regular-season game, and it's unclear if he has a legitimate shot at the No. 2 job.

“We keep looking and we could certainly address it a number of different ways, and all options are open at this time,” Caldwell said, per the Detroit Free Press.

Signing Dan Orlovsky is one possibility. He started seven games for the Lions from 2005-08.

Lions expected to focus on Dan Orlovsky
by Larry Hartstein |

Having lost backup quarterback Shaun Hill to the Rams, the Lions are expected to "turn their sights" to free agent Dan Orlovsky, reports the Detroit Free Press. Orlovsky played for Detroit from 2005-08 and spent the last two years with the Buccaneers.

In 2011 Orlovsky played for the Colts under coach Jim Caldwell, now the head man in Detroit. Orlovsky played reasonably well that season, completing 63.2 percent of his throws for 1,201 yards in eight games. He threw six touchdows and four interceptions while losing three fumbles.

Mike Glennon to start Thursday
by Larry Hartstein |

Buccaneers rookie quarterback Mike Glennon will start Thursday's game against the Redskins and play a significant amount, coach Greg Schiano said. He'll be followed by third-stringer Dan Orlovsky.

In three preseason games, Glennon is 26 of 54 passing for 334 yards and three touchdowns, with two interceptions.
