Ellerbe will sign a contract with the Eagles on Monday, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.
The 32-year-old Ellerbe will offer the Eagles some experienced depth at linebacker, where the team was in need of another body after Jordan Hicks (Achilles) was moved to injured reserve in late October. Ellerbe, who has played in 77 career games (42 starts), has been out of football since August after the Saints elected to release him.
Ellerbe (foot) was officially released from the Saints' injured reserve list Friday, Josh Katzenstein of the Times-Picayune reports.
This has been the plan all along after the 31-year-old veteran suffered yet another injury in late July. The Saints just needed to wait until Ellerbe received medical clearance to return to football activities before letting him go, which happened Friday morning. It'll be interesting to see if any teams quickly look to scoop up the oft-injured linebacker, as he could still be an effective piece when healthy.
Ellerbe was released from injured reserve Friday by the Saints, Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
Ellerbe was cleared to play earlier Friday morning, so his release from IR was imminent. He's now free to sign with any team, and he'll likely have multiple suitors despite his poor injury history.
Ellerbe (foot) has been cleared to play and will soon be released from injured reserve, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Ellerbe was waived/injured in late July by the Saints and thus landed on the team's injured reserve. But now, upon clearance, he'll be free to sign with whichever team he wants. While the linebacker has a rough injury history, many teams will likely be in pursuit of Ellerbe as soon as he is officially a free agent.
Ellerbe had originally been placed on the team's Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, but the Saints plan to waive the outside linebacker upon his medical clearance. Ellerbe has yet to remain healthy for a full 16-game season but racked up 101 tackles in 15 games with the Dolphins in 2013. Several teams will likely be in pursuit of the veteran upon his potential release from New Orleans. Stephone Anthony, Alex Anzalone, Michael Mauti and Manti Te'o (Achilles) will battle for reps at outside linebacker with Ellerbe out.
