Unger has elected to retire from the NFL, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Unger's departure leaves a major void in the middle of the Saints' offensive line, as the veteran center played more than 1,000 snaps last season. He finishes a 10-year career having been selected to three Pro Bowls and was donned a First-Team All-Pro back in 2012.
Unger (concussion) does not have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Steelers.

Unger (concussion) has been ruled out for the remainder of Monday's contest against the Panthers, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.

Unger (foot) is hopeful to be ready for action in Week 1, Josh Katzenstein of The Times-Picayune reports.

Unger (foot) is now expected to return during the preseason, Mike Florio of NBC Sports reports.
This is in stark contrast to recent reports from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that Unger would be on the Physically Unable to Perform list at the start of the regular season after undergoing foot surgery last weekend. Unger's return to action prior to the regular season commencing would be a huge turn of events for the Saints. He is a leader along the offensive line, and they lack depth along the interior portion of their front five.

Unger underwent surgery over the weekend for the same foot problem that plagued him over the course of last season, Herbie Teope of The Times-Picayune reports. His likely absence for the start of the season will create a huge void in the middle of the offensive line for the Saints. A two-time Pro Bowler, Unger has been an anchor for the team's line since coming over from the Seahawks in the Jimmy Graham trade prior to the 2015 NFL Draft. Given the Saints' lack of experienced depth behind Unger, the team could be in the market for a veteran center to fill in.
Unger (foot) is active for Saturday's game against the Buccaneers.
The veteran did not play the last time these two teams met, but he'll be back in the fold for Saturday's tilt. Unger and his linemates will have the tough task of slowing down Tampa Bay's defensive front anchored by Gerald McCoy.

Unger has been battling a foot injury since Week 14, but he was able to play on it against Arizona following a one-game absence. Since 2010, only Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (41) has more red zone touchdowns than Graham (40).
