Chiefs' Alex Smith: Throws two touchdowns versus Chargers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith completed 23 of 30 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 30-13 win over the Chargers. He also gained 13 yards on three carries.

Smith completed an impressive 77 percent of his passes, posting 7.7 yards per attempt while connecting with seven different receivers. His two touchdown passes couldn't have been more different -- a 64-yard deep ball to Tyreek Hill in the second quarter and a three-yard dump-off to Kareem Hunt in the third. Smith had a 5:4 TD:INT over the previous four games as his team went 1-3, but this bounce-back effort was crucial in a divisional matchup with playoff implications. Now with a career-high 25 TD passes this year, the veteran will face off with a middling Dolphins defense next week.

Chiefs' Alex Smith: No touchdowns in Week 14 win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith completed 20 of 34 passes for 268 yards and an interception while rushing five times for 24 yards in Sunday's 26-15 win over Oakland.

Smith was kept out of the end zone for the second time in four weeks, but he'll gladly trade the lack of personal accolades for a team victory to stay atop the AFC West. With the defense and running game dominating en route to a 26-0 lead through three quarters, Smith simply wasn't asked to do much in this one. The veteran quarterback has a pair of elite receiving weapons at his disposal in Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, but his recent inconsistency has been maddening for fantasy owners. The Chiefs have a Week 15 home game against the Chargers, with the winner taking sole possession of first place in the AFC West.

Chiefs' Alex Smith: Four touchdown passes not enough to end skid
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith completed 19 of 33 passes for 366 yards and four touchdowns while adding a 70-yard run in Sunday's 38-31 loss to the Jets.

Smith threw a pair of first-quarter touchdowns to Travis Kelce from 22 and 36 yards out for a quick 14-0 lead. The mobile quarterback set up a second-quarter field goal with a 70-yard run and tied the game 24-24 with a 79-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill in the third before hitting Hill again for a 40-yard score to take the lead in the fourth. Another 40-yard completion to Hill allowed Smith to work the ball down to New York's 19-yard line, but three consecutive incompletions resulted in a turnover on downs which pushed Kansas City's losing streak to four.

Chiefs' Alex Smith: Expected to remain starter rest of season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Chiefs plan to stick with Smith as their starting quarterback for the final five games of the season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. "My understanding is that it is not off the table that we will see [backup quarterback] Patrick Mahomes later this season at some point," Rapoport said Sunday on the NFL Network's "NFL GameDay Morning" program. "However, the Chiefs' plan as it stands right now is to have Patrick Mahomes take a redshirt season. They plan to have Alex Smith [be] their quarterback for the rest of the year." They believe it's more physical mistakes than anything and they hope and think that the offense will respond.

Though Smith's downturn in performance has played a significant part in the Chiefs' 1-5 slide following a 5-0 start to the season, Rapoport notes that the team has experienced more wide-ranging problems with the offense beyond the quarterback, with the run game and offensive line in particular not playing up to par. Mahomes, a 2017 first-round pick who impressed in the preseason, could get a look if the team falls out of playoff contention, but it appears the Chiefs remain confident that Smith can improve his play down the stretch and help the team hold off the Chargers for the AFC West title or secure a wild-card spot.

Chiefs' Alex Smith: Gets vote of confidence
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid reiterated Monday that Smith would remain the team's starting quarterback Week 13 against the Jets, Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star reports. "Alex is my guy," Reid said.

The Chiefs took their fifth loss in six games -- including their third in a row -- Sunday against the Bills, with Smith submitting another lackluster outing (23-for-36 for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception) in the process. Though first-round pick Patrick Mahomes could be the long-term heir to the starting role, it appears Reid isn't eager to turn to the inexperienced rookie while the Chiefs still maintain a one-game lead in the AFC West. Smith, who completed a remarkable 76.6 percent of his passes while throwing 11 touchdowns against no interceptions during the Chiefs' 5-0 start, has since taken a dramatic step back, but hasn't been completely disastrous during the 1-5 slide. He's posted a 63 percent completion rate, 7.0 yards per attempt, eight touchdowns and four picks over the past six contests.
