Chiefs' Alex Smith: Blows 18-point lead in another home playoff loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith completed 24 of 33 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns while adding 13 yards on four carries without a turnover in Saturday's 22-21, wild-card round loss to the Titans.

Smith threw for a career-best 154 first-quarter yards in leading his team to a 14-0 lead, including a 13-yard score to Travis Kelce. Kelce went down with a concussion in the second quarter, however, and the Kansas City offense largely stalled after that, though Smith did give the team a 21-3 lead with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson three seconds before halftime. This was yet another disappointing postseason exit for the 33-year-old signal-caller, and his team traded up in this past draft to take quarterback Patrick Mahomes 10th overall, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Smith in a different uniform next year even though he currently has one year remaining on his deal.

Chiefs' Alex Smith: Active but not expected to play
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith is officially active but not expected to play in Sunday's season finale against the Broncos.

Smith's status means he'll be in uniform and available to step in should rookie Patrick Mahomes suffer an injury, but that projects to be the only scenario under which he'd see the field before the postseason.

Chiefs' Alex Smith: Set to be rested Sunday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Patrick Mahomes will start at quarterback in place of Smith in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Broncos, Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports.

Mahomes, the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, is being groomed as Smith's successor, but his assignment Sunday doesn't signify a changing of the guard. Rather, with the Chiefs locked in as the AFC's No. 4 seed for the postseason, they'll give the rookie signal caller some valuable game experience, while affording Smith some rest. Assuming he's not unexpectedly pressed into action in Week 17, Smith with finish the 2017 season with 4,042 passing yards plus 355 rushing yards and a touchdown on 60 carries to go along with a nifty 26:5 TD:INT ratio.

Chiefs' Alex Smith: Leads team to AFC West crown
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith completed 25 of 39 passes for 304 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 29-13 win over the Dolphins. He also gained 13 yards on four rushes.

Smith was efficient spreading the ball around, as he connected with seven different pass catchers on an afternoon in which the Chiefs clinched their second straight AFC West crown. The veteran signal caller was able to hook up with Tyreek Hill downfield on multiple occasions, eclipsing the 300-yard mark through the air for the second time in the last four games in the process. Smith has also been taking care of the ball particularly well throughout December, as he's now generated a 7:1 TD:INT ratio over the last four games. With the division title now in hand, Smith will now try to help Kansas City secure a home playoff game by toppling the Broncos in Week 17.

Chiefs' Alex Smith: Throws two touchdowns versus Chargers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith completed 23 of 30 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 30-13 win over the Chargers. He also gained 13 yards on three carries.

Smith completed an impressive 77 percent of his passes, posting 7.7 yards per attempt while connecting with seven different receivers. His two touchdown passes couldn't have been more different -- a 64-yard deep ball to Tyreek Hill in the second quarter and a three-yard dump-off to Kareem Hunt in the third. Smith had a 5:4 TD:INT over the previous four games as his team went 1-3, but this bounce-back effort was crucial in a divisional matchup with playoff implications. Now with a career-high 25 TD passes this year, the veteran will face off with a middling Dolphins defense next week.
