Charles (knee - meniscus) is "ahead of schedule" in his recovery, Troy E. Renck of Denver7 reports. "I am doing everything. I have been cutting the last couple of days with the guys during the offseason workouts. I feel like the way I am cutting that I am back to the normal me, man. It feels good to be moving around again," Charles said Tuesday. "I have been knowing this the whole offseason [that the knee was fine]. Nobody can take nothing away from me except God when my time is up. I am still 30 years old. I still have a lot of special stuff to do."
Despite being held out of team drills during Denver's offseason program, it sounds as if Charles was at least able to ramp up his level of activity during the final days of June's minicamp earlier in the month. Most people want to typecast the veteran running back into a complementary third-down role given the combination of his age, injury history and proven receiving chops, but Charles evidently believes he's still capable of much more. Although the Broncos coaching staff may feel otherwise, nothing is certain until the pads come on in training camp, which remains Charles' expected return date.
Charles (knees) remains on track to be back on the field for the start of training camp, the Denver Post reports.
Until then, ESPN's Jeff Legwold relays that the veteran running back won't participate in team drills during the Broncos' offseason program, as he rebounds from last season's knee woes. The expectation is that Charles will enter the team drill fray at some point during training camp, at which time he'll ease into the team's backfield mix. How Charles looks at that stage of the summer will go a long way toward deciding what his workload this coming season might be, but he's presumably not being counted on to seize a high-volume role, at least immediately, with C.J. Anderson, Devontae Booker and rookie De'Angelo Henderson also on hand.
Charles (knee) practiced in a helmet and took part in position drills, both for the first time, at Monday's OTA, Ben Swanson of the Broncos' official site reports. "[Charles has] made great progress as far as his rehab," head coach Vance Joseph said after practice. "[When] he came here his quad was really weak, and now it's gotten stronger. He's running hills, he's with [running backs coach] Eric [Studesville] on a couple individual drills. So he's closer, but his time frame won't change. He'll still be ready for training camp for us."
Prior to Monday, Charles had been learning offensive coordinator Mike McCoy's offense from the sidelines. Notably, the running back reported that in addition to getting work as a running back, McCoy is also drawing up plays with Charles lined up at wide receiver. Considering the versatile running back already proved his mettle as a pass catcher during his time in Kansas City, having accumulated 285 receptions and 2,457 receiving yards across nine seasons, Charles should be up to the task. This report would seem to represent a slight boost to his fantasy stock because having him split out wide potentially allows Denver to get both Charles and one of C.J. Anderson or Devontae Booker on the field at the same time.
Charles' sights remain set on a full return at training camp, but for now he'll be forced to watch his fellow running backs from the sidleline at OTAs. Knee injuries have plagued Charles' production throughout the past two seasons, so he'll need to prove that he's not too beat up at this point in his career. Devontae Booker and rookie De'Angelo Henderson will also battle the veteran for touches behind C.J. Anderson.
Though he'll join his new teammates Monday, the veteran running back probably won't be cleared to practice any earlier than June minicamp or the start of training camp. Complications from a 2015 torn ACL limited Charles to only three games and 14 touches last season, with both knees requiring arthroscopic surgery along the way. His contract with the Broncos suggests he'll need to re-prove himself to earn a role in the offense, as his $900,000 base salary represents the minimum for players with nine years of service time. The deal is worth up to $3.75 million, but most of that comes in the form of incentives and roster bonuses. If he doesn't appear to have anything left, the Broncos could release him before Week 1 without taking much of a financial hit. Charles will compete for a spot in a backfield that figures to be led by C.J. Anderson, with 2016 fourth-round selection Devontae Booker and 2017 sixth-round selection De'Angelo Henderson also in the mix for playing time.
