Jonathan Stewart: Retires from football
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart (foot) is retiring from the NFL.

Stewart is signing a one-day contract to retire with the Panthers after a lost 2018 campaign in New York. The 2008 first-round pick played 10 of his 11 pro seasons for Carolina, peaking at 1,133 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 2009. Stewart retires as the franchise leader in carries (1,699), rushing yards (7,318) and rushing touchdowns (51), finishing slightly ahead of longtime backfield mate DeAngelo Williams in each category.

Jonathan Stewart: Hitting open market
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Giants let Wednesday's deadline pass without picking up the second-year option on Stewart's (foot) contract, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

As expected, Stewart hits the open market six weeks before his 32nd birthday. He's believed to have made a full recovery from the foot injury that landed him on injured reserve in 2018, but he'll have a hard time getting offers for much more than the veteran's minimum. It won't come as any surprise if Stewart decides to retire.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Won't have option picked up
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart (foot) will become a free agent when the Giants decline to exercise the option for the second season of his two-year contract, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.

It's a foregone conclusion the Giants won't exercise the option before the Feb. 4 deadline, instead moving forward with Saquon Barkley and Wayne Gallman in the backfield. The 31-year-old Stewart seems to have recovered from the foot injury that landed him on injured reserve in late September, but the Giants didn't see any reason to bring him back to the active roster. He likely will need to battle for a depth job if he intends to continue his career.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Won't return this season
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart (foot) isn't practicing Wednesday and will revert to injured reserve, ending his season, Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com reports.

Back on Nov. 15, the Giants designated Stewart as one of two players eligible to return from IR this season, giving the team 21 days to evaluate him for reinstatement to the roster. Though Stewart is back to full strength after being shut down with the foot injury earlier this season, the Giants simply didn't have a need for him with Wayne Gallman proving to be an effective complement to three-down workhorse Saquon Barkley while also offering more value than Stewart on special teams. Stewart is under contract with the Giants through the 2019 season, though it doesn't appear especially likely that the club will retain the 31-year-old.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Healthy enough to play
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Coach Pat Shurmur said Wednesday that Stewart (foot) is "ready to go" if the Giants need him for Sunday's game against the Bears, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

The Giants designated Stewart as one of their two players eligible to return from injured reserve, bringing him back to practice Nov. 15. The team will have until Dec. 6 to either activate Stewart or leave him on IR the rest of the campaign, with the decision likely to hinge on whether Saquon Barkley and Wayne Gallman remain in good health leading up to that date. Gallman has proven to be a competent backup for Barkley, and since Stewart doesn't offer value on special teams, there likely wouldn't be much incentive for the Giants to bring the veteran back onto the 53-man roster.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Designated for return from IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart (foot) returned to practice Thursday, opening a 21-day window for the Giants to evaluate him for a return to the 53-man roster.

The Giants placed Stewart on IR back on Sept. 28 after he failed to demonstrate much progress from a lingering foot injury. Shortly after the Giants dropped the veteran running back from the roster, coach Pat Shurmur clarified that Stewart would require about eight weeks to recover from the injury. Assuming that timeline is still accurate, Stewart would be eligible to return from IR as soon as the Giants' Nov. 25 contest against the Eagles. If activated, Stewart would likely handle only a limited role behind rookie Saquon Barkley, who has proven highly capable of handling a three-down workload out of the backfield.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Dealing with eight-week timeline
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart (foot) is expected to face an eight-week recovery period, with head coach Pat Shurmur stating that there is 'potential to bring him back' from injured reserve, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

Whether or not Stewart is activated from injured reserve likely depends on what other injuries the Giants face this season, as they are only permitted to bring back two players from the list after an eight-week inactive period. With Stewart out, Wayne Gallman is firmly entrenched as Saquon Barkley's backup at running back

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Placed on IR
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Giants placed Stewart (foot) on injured reserve Friday, Michael Eisen of the team's official site reports.

The nature of Stewart's foot injury is unknown, but it's serious enough that a lengthy recovery effort is expected. If this is the last down he plays in 2018, he'll finish the campaign with six carries for 17 yards. Moving forward, look for any RB touches not allotted to Saquon Barkley to go to Wayne Gallman.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Won't play against Saints
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart (foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Saints, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.

This shouldn't have much impact on the Giants' game plan, considering Stewart had just six carries on 17 snaps after three games. Wayne Gallman could get a few more touches than usual behind workhorse Saquon Barkley.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Sits out practice Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart missed Wednesday's practice due to a foot injury.

Stewart played just two offensive snaps in the Giants' Week 3 win over the Texans, rushing twice for eight yards. The bulk of the backfield work has fallen to rookie Saquon Barkley and Wayne Gallman through the Giants' first three games, so Stewart's uncertain status for Sunday's game against the Saints won't have many fantasy implications.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Remains No. 3 running back
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart carried the ball two times for eight yards in Sunday's win over the Texans.

That makes two straight weeks with just two carries for Stewart, and it looks like he is the clear No. 3 in the Giants' backfield pecking order, as Wayne Gallman carried the ball six times Sunday. Injuries will be the only way Stewart becomes a legitimate fantasy option this season.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Two carries in Week 2
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart carried the ball twice for one yard in Sunday's 20-13 loss to the Cowboys.

Stewart logged just five offensive snaps -- the same amount as fellow backup Wayne Gallman -- Sunday night, and while he outpaced Gallman in carries two to one, Gallman recorded one catch for 11 yards out of the backfield. Regardless, given the high usage of rookie star Saquon Barkley, there doesn't appear to be much of a role for either Stewart or Gallman in the backfield at this time.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Starting season as No. 3 on depth chart
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart is listed as the No. 3 back heading into Week 1's matchup with the Jaguars, Paul Schwartz of The New York Post reports.

Stewart failed to impress during the preseason, which was highlighted against the Jets in Week 3, as Stewart ran the ball three times for minus-seven yards and also lost a fumble. Pair Stewart's poor performance with the upside of Wayne Gallman as a pass-catcher out of the backfield and therein lies the decision to make the veteran Stewart the No. 3 option.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Hurts his cause in preseason win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart logged three carries for minus-seven yards and also lost a fumble in the Giants' 22-16 preseason win over the Jets on Friday.

Speculation about Stewart losing a grip on the No. 2 running back job to Wayne Gallman had already been running rampant prior to Friday's game, and the veteran's poor performance may have sealed his fate. Stewart's fumble came at the Jets' eight-yard line one play after Cody Latimer had secured a 54-yard reception late in the first quarter. Gallman found tough sledding on the ground as well (11 carries, 23 yards), but he looked notably better than Stewart while doing so, didn't turn the ball over and also secured four receptions. Stewart is still highly likely to hold on to a roster spot, but his playing time to open the season may be scarcer than originally envisioned.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Could slip to No. 3 on the depth chart
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart could be supplanted by Wayne Gallman as Saquon Barkley's primary backup, SNY reports.

Gallman is a holdover from the prior regime, but he played decently behind a bad line last year, is only 23 and is impressing his new coaches in camp. Stewart has a two-year $6.9 million deal and played for GM Dave Gettleman in Carolina, but he's 31 and hasn't been efficient in several years.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Joined by No. 2 overall pick
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart is part of a New York backfield that now includes No. 2 overall draft pick Saquon Barkley, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official website reports.

Stewart knew this was possible -- perhaps even likely -- when he signed with New York in mid-March on a two-year, $6.9 million contract that includes $2.95 million guaranteed, per OverTheCap. The Giants may envision Stewart serving as a mentor to Barkley, but it still seems like an unnecessarily large contract for a 31-year-old running back coming off a season in which he averaged 3.3 yards on 198 carries. What's more, 2017 fourth-round pick Wayne Gallman looked the part of a solid contributor during his rookie season, averaging 4.3 yards on 111 totes. Barkley instantly becomes the best pass catcher and pure runner in this backfield by a wide margin, but it isn't out of the question that Stewart and/or Gallman also find roles. Paul Perkins likely was headed for the roster bubble even before he suffered a torn pectoral while working out in the offseason.

Giants' Jonathan Stewart: Lands deal with Giants
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Giants signed Stewart on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

After he was released by the Panthers on Feb. 28, Stewart initially drew interest from the Seahawks and Lions, but the Giants will end up with his services in 2018. The soon-to-be 31-year-old is the Panthers' all-time leading rusher with 7,318 yards, which he churned out at a clip of 4.3 YPC. At the very least, the Giants will utilize Stewart on first and second downs this season, but Wayne Gallman and potentially a 2018 draft pick will eat into his overall volume.

Jonathan Stewart: Visiting with Detroit
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart and DeMarco Murray are scheduled for visits with the Lions on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

With Ameer Abdullah entering the final year of his rookie contract on the heels of a season in which he was limited to 3.3 yards per carry, Detroit is one of the obvious destinations for free-agent running backs. Stewart turns 31 next week and managed only 3.4 yards per carry for the Panthers last season, but he did score five times in his final five games, including a 103-yard, three-score effort against the stingy Minnesota defense in Week 14. He'd be part of a committee in Detroit, where Theo Riddick is locked in on passing downs and Abdullah still figures to compete for carries.

Jonathan Stewart: On Seattle's radar
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Stewart, who was released by the Panthers last week, is slated to visit the Seahawks, the Seattle Times reports.

Stewart, who turns 31 on March 21, recorded a career-low 3.4 yards per carry average in 2017, while logging 198 rushing attempts for 680 yards and six TDs in 15 games. Meanwhile, he was largely an afterthought in the Carolina passing attack, catching eight passes for the second season in a row. With 2017 first-rounder Christian McCaffrey now heading the Panthers backfield, Stewart will look to find a role elsewhere. Given that he's a native of Washington state and the Seahawks seem destined to part ways with Eddie Lacy, Stewart could be a decent complementary fit in a Seattle ground attack that cycled through ball carriers last season.
