Jets' Darron Lee: Ready to call plays
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Lee will be the primary play caller on defense this season, Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News reports.

The Jets signed Avery Williamson to replace Demario Davis as the "mike" inside linebacker in their 3-4 defense, but Lee likely will retain a three-down role while handling play calling from the "mo" spot. The 2016 first-round pick played 1,028 defensive snaps last season, notching 94 tackles (67 solo), three sacks and two forced fumbles in 15 games. Davis led the team in both tackles (135) and sacks (five), with his 1,118 defensive snaps ranking first in the entire league.

Jets' Elijah McGuire: Could handle passing downs
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

McGuire may serve as the Jets' third-down back this season, Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News reports.

McGuire only caught 17 passes during his rookie season, but he did have 130 receptions in 51 games at Louisiana-Lafayette. He'll likely compete with Bilal Powell for snaps on passing downs, while offseason addition Isaiah Crowell is the favorite to lead the team in carries. The Jets might ultimately release Powell to clear up cap space if Crowell and McGuire look good during training camp.

Jets' Chris Jones: Waived by Jets
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Jones (undisclosed) was waived by the Jets on Thursday.

Jones hasn't had much impact defensively since he left New England, seeing just 301 defensive snaps and racking up 17 tackles (12 solo) last season. There's a chance he's claimed off waivers by another club, or he will otherwise become a free agent.

Jets' Courtney Upshaw: Signs with Jets
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Upshaw has signed a contract with the Jets.

Upshaw spent the early years of his career playing outside linebacker in Baltimore's 3-4 scheme, but he has spent the past couple of seasons with a hand in the dirt at either defensive end or defensive tackle for the Falcons. Now at 272 pounds, he will return to a 3-4 scheme in New York, though it wouldn't be surprising if the Jets keep him at defensive end. Either way, the 2012 second-round pick's versatility should give him a shot to play on Sundays this fall.

Jets' Sam Darnold: Entering camp as third string
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Head coach Todd Bowles said Thursday that Darnold will start training camp as the third-string quarterback, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.

Josh McCown will enter training camp as the No. 1 quarterback, which doesn't come as much of a surprise, while Teddy Bridgewater will assume backup duties. Bridgewater was reportedly very impressive in terms of both movement and mechanics during the Jets' mandatory minicamp, and now Darnold will likely need a very impressive training camp to surpass the former Vikings quarterback and become the team's primary backup as a rookie. However, even if Darnold does end up being the No. 3 option to start the season, an opportunity could still end up presenting itself given the injury histories of both McCown and Bridgewater.
