Heatley continues torrid scoring streak for Senators

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators made quick work of the Buffalo Sabres -- again.

Dany Heatley scored twice to extend his club-record scoring streak to 15 games in the Senators' 6-1 victory over Sabres on Saturday night.

Ottawa is 3-0 against Buffalo this season and has outscored the Sabres 21-5, including a 10-4 drubbing in Buffalo on Nov. 2. Daniel Alfredsson has five goals and five assists against Buffalo this season.

"We're playing with a lot of confidence, obviously," Alfredsson said.

"A lot of things are clicking, we're getting good goaltending every night. We're doing a lot of good things out there and once we get up we're not sitting back. We realize that we have to be ready every night though, or we're not going to win."

Heatley has at least one point in every game the Senators (13-2-0) have played this season. He has 15 goals and 13 assists.

Buffalo, coming off a 5-2 home win over Toronto on Friday night, has two wins in its last nine game.

"When we implode, we really implode," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "We talked about turnovers and then we make two big ones and give them two goals. These guys can finish, so you can't afford turnovers against them."

Alfredsson, Chris Neil, Mike Fisher and Brian Pothier also scored for the Senators, who lead the NHL with 75 goals and have allowed a league-low 31.

Ray Emery made 24 saves and was just 5:39 away from his first career shutout before 19,414 fans at the Corel Centre.

Derek Roy scored his first goal of the season for Buffalo.

Neil opened the scoring when he beat Buffalo goalie Martin Biron with a second left in the first period. The play was reviewed and it was determined that the puck went in before the buzzer sounded.

"That goal gave us a nice edge. The guys came out (for the second period) and felt good about themselves and then the big line went to work," Senators coach Brian Murray said.

Alfredsson scored 59 seconds into the second and Heatley made it 3-0 16 seconds later. Fisher had a power-play goal five minutes later and Heatley got his second of the game, this time with Ottawa short-handed, just shy of the 17-minute mark.

Pothier scored Ottawa's lone goal of the third before Roy ended Emery's shutout bid later in the period as the Sabres avoided being shut out for a second time by the Senators this season.

  • Wade Redden earned his 300th career point when he assisted on Alfredsson's second-period goal. In 644 career regular season games, the 28-year old defenseman has 81 goals and 219 assists.
  • The Senators are 5-0 on Saturday nights this season and have outscored their opponents 30-2.
