Canucks overpower Bruins, capture 12th home win of season

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Brendan Morrison and Ryan Kesler scored 32 seconds apart to break open a tie game in the third period and lift the Vancouver Canucks to a 5-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Sunday night.

Daniel Sedin added his second goal of the game on a power play with 1:47 left as the Canucks improved to 12-1 at home and retook the lead in the Northwest Division.

Trevor Linden and Sedin staked Vancouver a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Boston tied it in the second before Brad Isbister's four-minute penalty for high-sticking allowed the Canucks to go back in front on the power play.

Morrison's attempted pass through the crease deflected off Boston defenseman Brad Stuart and through goalie Hannu Toivonen's legs at 4:33. Kesler broke in on a 2-on-1 on the next shift and ripped a wrist shot past Toivonen's blocker on the far side.

Isbister and newcomer Marco Sturm scored for the Bruins, who lost for the first time in three games since trading captain Joe Thornton to San Jose on Wednesday.

Glen Murray, tied for the Boston lead with 12 goals, had an assist in his first game after missing five with a groin injury.

Toivonen, starting ahead of Andrew Raycroft for a third straight game despite playing in Edmonton on Saturday night, made 34 saves.

Toivonen made five big saves in the first two minutes, but couldn't see Linden's shot through a screen at 4:06 -- just the fourth time in 15 games that Vancouver scored first.

Sedin doubled the lead 10 minutes later after a pretty give-and-go out of the corner with twin brother Henrik. After dropping the puck to Henrik, Daniel circled behind defenseman Hal Gill for the return pass, beating Toivonen with a quick shot over the blocker.

Isbister cut Boston's deficit to 2-1 on a rebound eight minutes into the second period. Sturm tied it in the late stages of a power play at 14:57.

Alex Auld, making his seventh straight start while Dan Cloutier recovers from a knee sprain, was at his best killing off a lengthy 5-on-3. But the Canucks goalie couldn't squeeze Sturm's backhander against the post with four seconds left in the second penalty.

Auld finished with 25 saves.
