New Jersey at New York

Rangers shut down Devils to take home-and-home series

    CBS wire reports

NEW YORK -- Henrik Lundqvist posted a shutout in his first preseason game, and Greg Moore set up both New York goals in the Rangers' 2-0 victory over the depleted New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night.

Lundqvist was untested in the first period when New York dominated play and held a 21-1 shots advantage. The Devils picked up their pace over the final 40 minutes, but were outshot 48-22 overall.

Moore assisted on newcomer Matt Cullen's first goal with the Rangers in the opening period, and then helped Petr Prucha score in the second.

The Rangers, who won their exhibition opener in New Jersey on Tuesday night, used a completely different lineup in the second half of the home-and-home series. Eleven New Jersey players dressed for both games.

This one featured more star power for New York in a half-empty Madison Square Garden. Brendan Shanahan was in the starting lineup in his Rangers debut, facing off against the team that selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 1987 draft.

The Rangers were without Jaromir Jagr, who is expected to sit out the preseason as he recovers from shoulder surgery. Jagr was injured during New Jersey's sweep of New York in the first round of last season's playoffs.

Devils backup Scott Clemmensen kept his team in the game by stopping 27 of 29 shots in just under 33 minutes. He was relieved by Frank Doyle, who made 20 saves and remained perfect in the preseason over three games.

Martin Brodeur got the game off after playing Tuesday night at home.

Cullen, signed away from the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes this summer, took a pass from Moore on New York's side of center ice and carried it all the way up. He finished with a backhander under the crossbar with 4:39 left in the first.

Prucha chipped in a centering pass from Moore 1:20 into the second.

Lundqvist, a finalist last season for the Vezina Trophy in his rookie year, played the entire game because he is expected to stay home while the Rangers travel to Puerto Rico for an exhibition contest against Florida this weekend.
