Phoenix at Detroit

Schneider leads barrage of nine goals for Red Wings

CBS wire reports

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings quickly found their missing offense.

Mathieu Schneider had three goals and an assist to lift Detroit to a 9-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. The Red Wings scored only three goals in their first two games.

Mikael Samuelsson scored twice, Pavel Datsyuk added a goal and two assists, Henrik Zetterberg, Jason Williams and Tomas Holmstrom had a goal and an assist each. Nicklas Lidstrom had three assists, and Niklas Kronwall chipped in with two.

"Guys were shooting the puck a little bit more," Williams said. "They happened to go in for us. On another night, they might not go in."

Dominik Hasek made 19 saves for the Red Wings.

Schneider, in his 18th season as an NHL defenseman, recorded his second career hat trick.

"I got a lucky one early. The other two, he didn't have much of a chance on. He was screened," Schneider said.

His other three-goal performance was last Nov. 26.

"Schneids can flat out shoot the puck, that we know," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "He had some seeing-eye shots, but he's been doing that for years."

Mike Comrie and Ed Jovanovski scored for Phoenix. Former Red Wings goalie Curtis Joseph allowed seven goals on 29 shots before being replaced by Mike Morrison to start the third period.

"It wasn't much fun out there, there's no question about that," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "They basically embarrassed us as a team. I don't think our team can get much lower than this."

The Red Wings broke open a 2-1 game with five goals in the middle frame.

Schneider scored his second at 2:10, and Williams had a power-play goal with 9:41 left. The Red Wings then scored three times in a span of 1:48 late in the period.

Schneider completed his hat trick with 3:31 remaining, Datsyuk scored at 17:55 and Samuelsson got his goal with 1:43 to go.

Holmstrom and Samuelsson's scored in the third period.

Zetterberg opened the scoring for Detroit with a power-play goal 5:26 in. Comrie tied it for Phoenix just 46 seconds later.

Schneider gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead with his first goal, which came with 6:12 remaining in the opening period.
