Canucks rebound to beat Oilers after bad loss to Flyers two days ago wire reports

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Alexandre Burrows and the Vancouver Canucks answered all the criticism they faced after a lackluster loss.

Burrows scored a shorthanded goal in the second period and the Canucks rebounded from a poor outing two days earlier with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.

"We have to have that same effort and commitment every night," said Roberto Luongo, who stopped 28 shots for the win. "It's an 82-game season and there are going to be lots of ups and downs and that was a pretty big down last game. It was good to respond this way."

Canucks center Ryan Kesler was in the lineup just one game after being cross-checked in the face by Philadelphia's Jesse Boulerice on Wednesday. Boulerice received a 25-game suspension Friday, the longest single-season ban in NHL history, for the incident.

Henrik Sedin, Rick Rypien, Markus Naslund and Brendan Morrison also scored for the Canucks, who were called out by general manager Dave Nonis for their poor play following an 8-2 loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday.

"The bottom line was we had a much better work ethic," Burrows said. "We battled a lot harder around the boards and made smarter plays, higher percentage plays. That was the key right there."

Sheldon Souray and Raffi Torres scored for Oilers, who have lost three straight after opening the season with two wins.

"It's not the time of year to start naming names," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "Collectively, it falls on all of us to find a way to win hockey games.

"We had a lot of opportunities, it just seemed at times we were a little impatient. It was a frustrating game."

Edmonton sent Robert Nilsson and J.F. Jacques to Springfield of the AHL after the game, and called up forwards Rob Schremp and Zack Stortini.

Vancouver took a 2-0 lead as Henrik Sedin scored his first goal of the season on a pass from his brother Daniel, and Rypien, recalled from Manitoba of the AHL earlier Friday, scored on a rebound.

Edmonton cut the lead in half with just 10 seconds left in the first period when Souray scored his first of the season.

Vancouver restored the two-goal lead and knocked goaltender Mathieu Garon from the game three minutes into the second period when Rypien sprung Burrows on a breakaway for the shorthanded goal.

Dwayne Roloson replaced Garon.

Edmonton scored its first power-play goal in 19 extra-man situations this season late in the second period when Torres picked up his own rebound and slid it through the legs of Luongo.

Morrison scored just 20 seconds later for Vancouver.

Naslund put the game away for the Canucks with two minutes to go as his weak shot from the side of the net trickled past a surprised Roloson.
