Ribeiro's goal in overtime gives Stars win over Flames

CALGARY, Alberta -- Mike Ribeiro came up big for the Dallas Stars -- again.

Ribeiro scored his second goal of the game 57 seconds into overtime to give the Stars a 3-2 victory over Calgary on Friday.

After winning a faceoff deep in the Flames' zone, Ribeiro redirected defenseman Sergei Zubov's shot past Miikka Kiprusoff for his 18th goal of the season.

"It was a good heads up play by Zubov to throw the puck in there just a little bit wide for the tip," said Ribiero, two goals shy of his career high set with Montreal in 2003-04.

Centering the Stars' top line with Brenden Morrow and Antti Miettinen, Ribeiro has six goals and 11 points in the past six games. Dallas has gone 5-1 in those games to move into second place in the Western Conference.

"Usually it starts after the All-Star Game, but this year every game's important as everyone's in it," Ribiero said. "We're playing with confidence right now, everyone's playing well and chipping in, and our special teams are going good."

After Calgary's Matthew Lombardi and Alex Tanguay gave the Flames a 2-1 lead in the second period, Dallas tied it early in the third on Niklas Hagman's 12th goal.

"We had opportunities, a lot of them," Lombardi said. "We came out a little flat but we picked our game and did some good things but we didn't capitalize while they took care of their chances."

The most dangerous Dallas player all night, Hagman finally got a puck behind Finnish countryman Kiprusoff when he shook free of defenseman Anders Eriksson and raced to the front of the net to one-time a cross-ice pass from Loui Eriksson.

In the second period, Hagman was thwarted three times by Kiprusoff and the Dallas player had a fourth chance ricochet off the goal post.

"I had my fair share of shots and chances, a couple close ones and eventually I got a really good pass that I couldn't miss," Hagman said.

Calgary was playing its first home game after becoming the fourth team in NHL history to win every game of a six-game trip.

Mike Smith stopped 21 shots for Dallas, and was at his best with the score tied 2-2 in the third period. In one stretch, he sprawled to get a stick on Jarome Iginla's one-timer from the faceoff circle before smothering Daymond Langkow's shot moments later.

"Our penalty killing was huge in the third period and Smitty's a big part of the PK," Ribiero said. "'s been really good for us and did a great job for us tonight keeping us in the game."

Ribeiro compared Smith to Vancouver star Roberto Luongo.

"He's so big and he's good in practice, it's so hard to score against him," Ribeiro said. "It makes me think of Luongo size-wise and his style is similar, too."

Kiprusoff made 21 saves for Calgary.

  • Iginla entered the game with eight goals during a five-game goal streak.
  • The Flames have lost 12 games at home, surpassing their total from all of last season when they led the NHL with a 30-9-2 home record.
